Casual Mode is for players that want to enjoy Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) at their pace, while Challenge Mode is made for those who want to test their skills. Check out the differences in gameplay between these two modes!
The difficulty in Casual Mode retains the same difficulty by default. The Story Commissions are rather easy to clear so long as the player is prepared or skilled enough to clear them with their own characters or with provided trial characters.
Challenge Mode is built for players who are more familiar with the hack-and-slash gameplay, and want to test the limits of their skills and the stats of their Agents. This is a stat-check to see how properly built an Agent is.
For players who want to switch difficulties, players can go to Options in the Main Menu and switch to the "Other" tab. The Main Story difficulty option will be the last option in that section.
The toggle to switch between Casual and Challenge Modes can also be found at the bottom left of the Agent Select screen in a Story Commission.
The game will give players a warning every time they decide to switch between difficulties to verify their choice. Do not forget to double-check before continuing with the difficulty in the Story Commission!
One difference in Challenge Mode that is immediately noticeable is that the enemies have higher HP values. They will be able to take more damage before being defeated.
This is especially prominent in a major boss fight, as it will take more time to clear the stage with their HP being boosted during Challenge Mode.

Enemies also deal more damage in Challenge Mode in comparison with Casual Mode. They will be able to deal around 2 to 3 times more damage, which will take unprepared players by surprise at how fast it can wipe out an Agent's HP bar.
For players that want to simply enjoy the story and to have to worry about how hard the enemies and boss fight will be, they can opt to do Casual Mode for a more streamlined experience.
Challenge Mode can become a more difficult option once players go deeper into the game's story. However, the option does exist for those who want to test how strong their currently built Agents are against more demanding opponents.
One thing to note is that the clear rewards between Casual Mode and Challenge Mode are not separate, nor do they have differences in given rewards. Once it is cleared in one difficulty, it is also considered as cleared in the other.
