Shadow Makoto can switch his affinities based on what Persona he has currently equipped. Pay attention to what Persona he's currently on before attacking him.

Note that while the Protagonist will also copy the weakness of whichever Persona it has, it cannot be downed by the respective spell but will take increased damage from it.

How to Beat Shadow Makoto

The following tips can help you beat ??? (Shadow Protagonist) in battle.

  1. Use Armageddon to Defeat Him Immediately
  2. Changes Persona for Each SEES Member You Bring
  3. Form a Team with Members Not Weak to Each Other
  4. Use Theurgies to Bypass Null
  5. Bring Metis in Your Party
  6. Has Access to 1 More and Persona Switching
  7. Takes Three Turns to Change Persona

Use Armageddon to Defeat Shadow Makoto Immediately

Persona 3 Reload Episode Aigis - MC Fight Using Armageddon
Aigis can use Armageddon, which, if used, can end the fight immediately. Since this boss fight doesn’t have any follow-up bosses, you can safely use this theurgy to save time!

To get Armageddon, make sure that you have Helel and Satan on your imported save file so that you can just summon them instead of having to fuse them again.

Changes Persona for Each SEES Member You Bring

P3R Episode Aigis - Swap Personas

Depending on which party member you bring to this fight, the boss can have 3 to 4 phases where it uses the Persona of each member of SEES you bring. The Shadow Protagonist's affinities will also change depending on its equipped Persona.

The exception to this rule is Metis, where the enemy will be unable to use Psyche and just cycle between the Persona of the two other party members you have plus Athena.

Form a Team with Members Not Weak to Each Other

Persona 3 Reload Episode Aigis - MC Fight Team Sample
Since Shadow MC will use Personas from your actual team, make sure to bring teammates who aren't weak to each other's elements.

These Personas will use the heavy versions of their main elements, and you can prevent him from getting extra turns by setting up your team without elemental weaknesses to one another.

Use Your Theurgies to Bypass Null

Mitsuru Theurgy Blizzard Edge
You can attack Shadow Makoto with Theurgies as these can bypass his resistances. Theurgies like Junpei's Hack n' Blast, or your own Fusion Spells will do the trick. Mitsuru's Blade of Execution is also an amazing Theurgy to use as it can deal Almighty damage while also giving you a free Debilitate on the boss.

Bring Metis In Your Party

Persona 3 Reload Episode Aigis - MC Fight Metis
Metis is a great choice here as the Shadow Makoto cannot copy Psyche. This makes it so that the Shadow Makoto can only copy 3 of the 4 party members present in the battle, making it easier to target his weakness.

Shadow Makoto has Access to 1 More and Persona Switching

P3R Episode Aigis - MC Switch Personas.jpg
If Shadow Makoto does manage to target a party member's weakness, it will get another turn and can swap Persona to target another allies' weakness.

Shadow Makoto Takes Three Turns to Change Persona

Persona 3 Reload Episode Aigis - MC Fight Changing Persona
Shadow Makoto will only change personas after using them three times. This means the element he nulls will also change after. Keep this in mind during combat to plan which moves to use before or after he switches

・Pay attention to Shadow MC's current Persona and make sure you won't be downed when it's his turn.
・Since this party does not have a dedicated healer, you can take on a defensive role and have Personas with Mediarahan or buffing/debuffing skills.

Vile Assault
High Counter
・Junpei's high Strength stat and Crit Amp makes him a valuable party member, as he can deal damage while having the best possibility for a critical hit for All-Out Attacks.
・Shadow Makoto uses Physical moves for his first turn so, High Counter is valuable to mitigate the damage he does.
Brave Blade is Junpei's bread and butter when it comes to inflicting crtis.
