How to Beat Grand Gnome & Vas Phein

Tips

Defeat the Regular Enemies First

Defeat the Regular Enemies First.gif
Both at the beginning of the battle and when Vas Phein is at half HP, enemies will spawn in the arena. Focus on defeating them first – leaving them alive throughout the fight will only make it difficult for you to manage their attacks, all while trying to avoid taking damage from Grand Gnome and Vas Phein.

Avoid the Glowing Lines

Avoid the Glowing Lines.gif
The only Weak Point you'll be able to deal damage to on Grand Gnome will be shielded throughout the fight until you manage to defeat Vas Phein. Grand Gnome will still be able to attack you while it's shielded, with the path of the attack being indicated by the glowing lines you'll see crisscrossing the ground.

Avoid these marked areas on the ground, as Grand Gnome will send an energy beams pulsing down these lines, which will cause you significant damage.

Use Wind-type Artes

Not only are Grand Gnome and Vas Phein weak to Wind-type Artes, but the regular enemies that spawn throughout the battle are too. Use Wind Artes and you'll be abe to take care of them much more easily.

Reach Recommended Level

Due to the difficulty of the area you need to go through before facing off against Grand Gnome or Vas Phein, it is recommended that you reach the Recommended Level of 60 on top of getting the best available weapons in order to have a smoother experience with this boss fight.

Focus on Regular Enemies

Whenever a regular enemy is summoned to the area, use Alphen to focus on them to draw them away from Rinwell and Shionne to prevent them from taking too much damage.

Primary Healer

Like in most battles, simply keep Shionne as the primary healer of the team. She is, however, powerful enough to deal with the regular enemies by simply repeatedly using her Tres Ventos Arte.

Rinwell should have plenty of Wind-type Artes at this point – these powerful attacks do have the drawback of taking long time to cast. Make sure no enemies approach her as it might interrupt her casting.

Use Boost Attack to Break Shields

Any regular enemies that are summoned to the field will be Earth-type zeugles. They have high defense against physical attacks, so use Law's Boost Attack to break through their guard, allowing you to deal more damage to them.

Grand Gnome & Vas Phein Attack Patterns

Energy Beams

Energy Beams.gif
Both Grand Gnome and Vas Phein can send beams of energy across the ground in a crisscross pattern. Grand Gnome in particular uses this attack as its primary means of causing you damage. These are easily avoidable by observing when the lines on the ground glow, indicating that the shockwave is incoming.

Talon Dive

Talon Dive.gif
A Vas Phein specific attack where, while in the air, it will dive down with its talons spread wide in an attack. Dodge ouf of the way of this before the creature can reach you, and counter-attack immediately if you manage to perform a Perfect Dodge.

Alternatively, you can use Shionne's Boost Attack to interrupt this attack.

Breath Attacks

Breath Attacks.gif
Vas Phein also performs several breath attacks regularly. These come in the form of:

  • A dark cloud which Vas Phein can expel while on the ground or in the air.
  • Blobs of poison that can inflict the Poison Physical Ailment if you take damage from this attack enough.

Apart from this, Vas Phein will also use its wings to spawn cyclones when it flies into the air, or to simply sweep towards you before trying to peck you with its beak.
