Tales of Arise - Combat Tips and Techniques

This guide is a compilation of useful Combat Tips and Techniques for Tales of Arise. Read on to learn important combat tips and techniques, as well as what to do when you can't win a battle!

Combat Tips

Combat in Tales of Arise is relatively simple, but also very nuanced. Read through our combat tips below to learn the ins and outs of combat!

Defeat Enemies One at a Time

The majority of the combat encounters will have multiple enemies present on the field. Lock-on to the target that's weakest to your controlled party member and defeat it before moving onto the next target.

While it's possible to hit multiple enemies with some Artes, it's significantly easier to single-out and eliminate opponents quickly since this effectively lessens the damage the opposing side can cause to your team.

Match Your Element With The Enemy Weakness

Use the targeting button to scan each opponent once the battle starts. Doing so will reveal that enemy's element along with other useful information such as if they're armored or evasive.

・Light <> Dark
・Fire <> Water
・Wind <> Earth

Once you've gotten the relevant information on the opponents, use attacks that oppose that enemy's element to deal more damage.

Stagger your Enemies

Tales of Arise - Stagger
Continuously attacking your opponent will cause them to stagger. While in their defenseless state, you can easily hit them with stronger attacks. The higher your Penetration stat is, the easier it is to stagger smaller enemies.

Cancel an Enemy's Arte

When your enemy is charging their Arte, interrupt them with Break Boosts. If you cannot land a Break Boost attack, it's best to evade and regroup when they cast an Arte.

Keep your combos coming

If you want to earn combo points, it's important to keep your opponent staggered to keep them from attacking. If you're aiming to make longer combos, choose equipment that will boost your Penetration stat.

Utilize Counter-Edge

Tales of Arise - Perfect Dodge and Counter Edge
Observe your enemy's movements and dodge at the right moment to perform a Counter-Edge. Counter Edge deals even more damage and staggers your enemies even longer after making a Perfect Dodge.

Down Your Enemies

Putting your enemy in a downed state will increase the damage you deal to them. You can achieve this by using the right Boost Attacks for the right enemy type, or by breaking the weak points of some zeugles.

  • Alphen - Consumes HP in exchange for higher damage and higher chance of downing your enemy.
  • Shionne - Restricts flying ability and downs flying enemies.
  • Rinwell - Interrupts an enemy casting an Arte
  • Law - Breaks the armor of armored enemies and downs them
  • Kisara - Stops and downs a charging enemy if hit when charging. Gives additional Defense Buff for all allies.
  • Dohalim - Restricts the movement of agile enemies making it easier to hit them

Look for Enemy Weakpoints

Tales of Arise - Enemy Core
Some enemies will have weakpoints that are denoted by orange areas on their bodies. Hitting them here will trigger a Core Break that leaves them incapacitated longer than your typical down.

Juggle Your Opponent

Similar to keeping your enemies downed, another effective tactic is to keep your enemies airborne. Enemies who have been knocked skyward are completely defensless and are effectively stunned for the duration.

Recover AG with Boost Attacks

Tales of Arise - What Are Boost Attacks
Every time you use a Boost Attack, you can recover 3 AG. Additionally, if the Boost Attack matches your opponents' characteristics, you can put them in a downed state.

This is also effective for stringing your combos

The boost attack itself is also an attack, so it can increase the number of hits and extend the number of combos. After that, you can use the recovered AG to continue your combo, which is very useful when you are farming for combat points.

Go into Over Limit mode

Tales of Arise - Enter Over Limit Mode 2
This state only lasts for about 10 seconds, but those 10 second could really mean the difference between victory and death. In this state you don't expend AG so keep those Artes coming.

Do a lot of damage with Mystic Artes

Mystic Artes are the strongest special attacks of the characters, which have also became a staple in the Tales series. Activate them by clearing certain conditions and holding two Arte Buttons while in Over Limit mode.
