There are followers whose Bond Ranks will naturally increase the more you play the story. An example of this is Gallica.

During your free time, you can spend time with any of your allies or followers which will certainly increase their Bond Rank. A handshake icon above your allies or followers will indicate that you can spend time with them. However, it's important to note that doing this will consume one whole day.

Gallica can guide you in finding followers if you don't know where they are. Once you talk to her during your free day, she will give you advice on who you could spend your time with.

Bond Ranks show how deep your relationship is with a followers. Higher Bond Ranks would unlock locations, specific actions, and would also lead to stronger Archetypes. Thus, you should make a habit of raising your follower's Bond Rank all throughout the game.
