Metaphor: ReFantazio uses a turn-based combat system that has the entire party acting before the enemy. However, if the enemy attacks you first in the overworld and initiates combat, they will get the advantage and act first instead.
Each action in combat will use up a Turn Icon at the top of the screen. Once all Turn Icons have been used up, combat will swap to the enemy's turn. If you've played games from the Shin Megami Tensei series, then this will be very familiar as it is similar to the Press Turn system.
Depending on how many party members you have, that's how many Turn Icons you'll get. For example, if you only have two party members, you will only get two Turn Icons in battle.
Whenever you're in combat, you should always aim to exploit the enemy's weaknesses. Instead of consuming one Turn Icon, you will only use half a Turn Icon, which then gives you an extra turn in battle.
As much as possible avoid using an attacks that the enemy can block, as it's extra punishing with the Turn Icon system since you will lose two turns instead of one. If the enemy absorbs or reflects the attack, it'll be even worse because you lose all of your Turn Icons.
The order your party members act in battle is determined by who has the highest Agility stat. If you want certain characters to act first, like your main support, then make sure they have a higher "Ag" than your other party members.
When out in the overworld, you can approach an enemy and click the Squad Combat button to initiate combat. Depending on what platform you're playing on, the button for this command will be different.
It's highly recommended to attack enemies first before initiating Squad Combat. This will deplete their Break Gauge, allowing you to damage and stun them at the start of combat.
