This is a walkthrough of the That Lucky Old Sun side quest in Fallout New Vegas (FNV). Read on to learn how to unlock That Lucky Old Sun, where to find Fantastic or Lt. Haggerty, the quest rewards, and the best dialogue choices for completing the That Lucky Old Sun side quest.
You can start this quest by approaching the HELIOS One entrance and waiting for Lt. Haggerty to approach you. This will automatically start the quest, regardless of which dialogue option you choose.
Objectives | |
---|---|
1 | Approach Lt. Haggerty in HELIOS One |
2 | Get the Password for the Reflector Terminal ┣ Take the Password From Fantastic ┗ Speak to Ignacio in the Adjacent Room |
3 | Connect the East and West Reflectors |
4 | Repair the Auxiliary Generator ┣ Repair the Generator Yourself ┗ Activate Python on the Second Floor |
5 | Route the Power in the Mainframe Reward: Fame or Infamy with the Faction of your choice |
6 | Use the Reflector Control Panel |
7 | Return to Ignacio Reward: 350 XP, Big Book of Science |
To start the quest, simply approach Lt. Haggerty at the entrance of HELIOS One. She will ask you why you want to enter the building. You can then either claim to be NCR if you have enough reputation, lie if you have 30 skill points in Speech, or talk your way in if you have 30 skill points in Science.
You can get the password for the terminal from the two scientists in the lab inside the HELIOS One building. You can either enter through the front door of the building and head to the lab, or take a shortcut by entering through the rear entrance. However, if you choose the rear entrance, you will need to pick the lock on the door to get in.
For the first password, you can get it from Fantastic, who can be found inside a lab in the HELIOS One building. Talk to him and ask what he is trying to accomplish, and he will eventually give you his password.
The second password can be obtained from Ignacio in the adjacent room of the lab. You can either choose a dialogue option that requires the Confirmed Bachelor Perk or one that requires 35 skill points in Speech. Either way, finish the conversation and you will receive the second password.

After receiving the passwords for the reflectors, you need to connect them by accessing their terminals. Use the back door in Ignacio's lab and exit the main building. From here, you will be in an open area facing the tower. You can find the consoles that you need to activate near the solar panels on the east and west sides of the tower.
Once you have connected the east and west reflectors, you can head straight into the Solar Collection Tower. Here, you will encounter a couple of robots defending the area, so proceed with caution. Continue exploring until you reach the HELIOS One Observation Level. There, you will need to fix a generator, which is required to use the mainframe terminal.
You can choose to repair the generator yourself, but it will require 35 skill points in Repair and a piece of scrap metal. This will instantly fix the mainframe.
Alternatively, if you do not have enough points in Repair, you can activate the robot named Python on the second floor of the Observation Level. This route requires 45 skill points in Science, or you can use the Poseidon Energy Employee ID Card to activate Python.
After the auxiliary generator is fixed, you can use the mainframe terminal to choose where you want the power to go. You will have five different choices, each with different possible results that can give you fame with the faction of your choice.
Output Configuration | Result |
---|---|
McCarran and Las Vegas Strip | ・NCR Fame |
Fremont and Westside | ・Followers Fame |
Full Region | ・Followers Fame |
ARCHIMEDES II | ・Wipe Out the NCR ・NCR Infamy |
Full Region (Emergency Output Level) | ・None |
After deciding which way the power will go, you can then head outside to the Reflection Control Panel and activate it.
Once you activate the Reflector Control Panel, you can now head back to the HELIOS One building and talk to Ignacio or Fantastic to end the quest.
When selecting where to redirect the power on the Mainframe Terminal, it is highly recommended that you choose the ARCHIMEDES II option. This choice enables you to use the Range Finder, which you can obtain by completing the I Could Make You Care side quest or by acquiring it directly from Max in Freeside.
