How to Unlock One For My Baby

Talk to Craig Boone

The One For My Baby side quest is started by speaking to Craig Boone in Novac, who can be found at nighttime in the sniper's nest at the top of Dinky the Dinosaur. If you speak to Manny Vargas beforehand, he will give you information on Boone's predicament and shift, but it is not necessary to talk to Manny to start Boone's side quest.

Speak with Boone

Find Boone in the sniper's nest at the top of the Dino Bite gift shop during the evening. He will tell you to look for the person who sold his wife Carla to the Legion, which would be Jeannie May Crawford, and lead them in front of Dinky the Dinosaur once you give the signal of putting on Boone's beret.

Optional: Ask around Novac for Information on Boone's Wife

After speaking to Boone, you have the option of asking the Novac locals if they know anything about Boone's wife Carla and what happened to her. Only No-bark Noonan gives important information that will help you find evidence to pin down Jeannie May Crawford as the culprit.

Optional: Look for Evidence in the Motel Lobby

If you spoke with No-bark Noonan, you are given the optional objective to find evidence of the guilty party in the motel lobby. The only object of interest inside is the safe, which can be unlocked either by stealing Jeannie May Crawford's safe key or by picking the lock if you have 25 Lockpick skill. Inside, there will be a Bill of Sale which reveals that Jeannie May Crawford sold Boone's wife to the Legion.

Send Someone in Front of Dinky the Dinosaur

Once you have chosen a suspect, talk with them and tell them to come with you to the front of Dinky the Dinosaur. Remember to do this at night, when Boone is on shift and ready to shoot. When your chosen suspect stops in front of Dinky the Dinosaur, equip Boone's Beret as Apparel to signal him to shoot the suspect.

Report Your Findings to Boone

Go back to Boone in the sniper's nest in Dinky the Dinosaur, and he will ask you how you knew your suspect was guilty. From here, there are three possible outcomes depending on the dialogue options available to you based on if you have evidence or enough Speech.

Boone Thanks You

If you have Boone snipe Jeannie May Crawford and present the Bill of Sale, he will thank you for helping give him closure and reward you with +100 caps, a 1st Recon Beret and positive Karma. Alternatively, if you have 55 Speech, you can convince Boone you narrowed down the suspects by process of elimination no matter who you had Boone shoot, which still assures Boone but does not grant positive karma.

Boone Gets Mad at You

If you have no Bill of Sale and insufficient Speech, then you will end up having to choose the dialogue options about the suspect's story not adding up or about having a hunch, which will both give you negative karma. Boone will be mad at you and order you to get out of his sight.

Boone Tries to Kill You

If you tell Boone you just wanted him to kill someone, then aside from getting negative karma, Boone will become immediately hostile and you will be forced to fight and kill him, which also preemptively fails the side quest I Forgot To Remember To Forget.

Optional: Ask Boone to Become Your Companion

After officially completing the quest, if you were able to assure that he shot the right person, you will be able to ask him what his plans are, then propose that he join you on your journey. There's a normal dialogue option and an option which requires Intelligence 6, but both options will successfully recruit Boone as your companion.

Having the true culprit, Jeannie May Crawford, executed and presenting the Bill of Sale as evidence will grant the most rewards. Aside from the standard +150 XP upon quest completion, you will also be rewarded with +100 caps, a 1st Recon Beret, positive karma, Boone as a companion and Boone's follow-up side quest, I Forgot To Remember To Forget.
