This is a walkthrough of the I Forgot to Remember to Forget side quest in Fallout New Vegas (FNV). Read on to learn how to unlock I Forgot to Remember to Forget, where to find Craig Boone, the quest rewards, and the best dialogue choices for completing the I Forgot to Remember to Forget side quest.
If you asked either Manny Vargas in Novac or Sergeat Bitter-Root in Camp McCarran about the Bitter Springs incident, you will be able to ask Boone about his experience in Bitter Springs as well. However, he will not answer your questions until you complete Legion-related quests worth a total of 5 points while he is equipped as your follower.
Refer to the table below to check which quests will progress your relationship with Boone. Take note that as these quests involve fighting the Legion, you will inevitably accumulate infamy with Caesar's Legion if you pursue unlocking the I Forgot to Remember to Forget side quest.
Quests to Progress Relationship with Boone | |||
---|---|---|---|
Location | Associated Quest | Event | Points |
Camp McCarran | Silus Treatment | Kill Silus | +1 |
Camp McCarran | I Put a Spell on You | Kill Captain Curtis | +1 |
The Fort | Render Unto Caesar | Kill Caesar | +2 |
Nipton | Booted | Save and release the Powder Ganger hostages | +2 |
Nipton | None | Kill Vulpes Inculta | +1 |
Nelson | Back in Your Own Backyard | Save all the crucified NCR hostages | +2 |
Nelson | Back in Your Own Backyard | Kill all the crucified NCR hostages | +1 |
Camp Cottonwood | Eye for an Eye | Wipe out the Legion here completely | +2 |
Once you have obtained at least 5 points from accomplishing enough Legion-related side quests, you will be able to talk to Boone about his experience in Bitter Springs. You can suggest that you and Boone go there together to settle past regrets, which Boone will initially decline.
However, after travelling for a bit longer or taking out a single group of wandering enemies, Boone will speak to you and change his mind, asking that you accompany him to Bitter Springs.
Objectives | ||
---|---|---|
1 | Talk to Boone about Bitter Springs | |
2 | Head to Bitter Springs and Speak with Boone | |
3 | Head to Coyote Tail Ridge and Speak with Boone | |
4 | Agree with Boone to Kill Attacking Legionnaires | |
5 | Speak to Boone in the End | |
Option A | Option B | |
Tell Boone He Can Change Reward: 500 XP, NCR Fame, 1st Recon Survival Armor for Boone |
Tell Boone Get Over It Reward: 500 XP, NCR Fame, 1st Recon Assault Armor for Boone |
If you have fulfilled the prerequisite conditions, talk to Boone about what happened in Bitter Springs, then suggest you two go back together. Boone will initially decline, but after time passes in game and you continue wandering with him as a companion, he will be the one to request that you two go to Bitter Springs, marking the official start of the quest.
Once you and Boone get to Bitter Springs, Boone will speak up about his memories there, recalling that he was posted on Coyote Tail Ridge to take out the target Great Khans. You will then be prompted to head towards Coyote Tail Ridge.
Head towards Coyote Tail Ridge and continue speaking with Boone about his past. The dialogue options here will not affect the ending of the side quest, but they will offer insights to Boone's character. Boone will then ask that you two camp out on Coyote Tail Ridge for the night.
After spending the night on Coyote Tail Ridge, Boone will inform you that there are incoming Legionnaires coming to raid Bitter Springs. He tells you he plans to stay and fight against them, to which you can offer to help fight with him. There is an option demanding you both flee, but the quest won't reach its conclusion unless you stay and fight.
The Legion will spawn in and come from three different areas, which you may have to take note of in order to kill any stragglers. There are instances when the Legionnaires will, for some reason, not advance towards Bitter Springs, so you may have to take the fight to them.
After taking out all the Legionnaires, Boone will approach you and start lingering on his past. You have two dialogue options that each reward a different set of armor for Boone. Take note that there is no difference in stats between the two, only aesthetics, and aside from that, +500 XP and NCR fame are rewarded regardless of dialogue choice.
Telling Boone that he can still change thanks to his regret will grant him the khaki short-sleeved 1st Recon Survival Armor.
Telling Boone to get over his regret and that death is natural in war will grant him the black long-sleeved 1st Recon Assault Armor.
Since the rewards for the quest are the same regardless of dialogue choice and the armor you can obtain for Boone share the same stats, you can choose whether to tell Boone he can change or that he should get over his past based solely on which color and style of armor you prefer on Boone between the khaki 1st Recon Survival Armor and the black 1st Recon Assault Armor.
