Loot From Mercenaries

Modern Warfare 3 - Mercenary Drop
Eliminating mercenaries has a chance to drop a Gas Mask upon death. They can easily be found anywhere across the map. If you're having a hard time locating them, consider going to a Mercenary Stronghold or starting a random Contract, as they usually spawn to sabotage you from completing objectives.

Alternatively, you can also search for Armored Trucks along main roads driven by mercenaries if there are no nearby Mercenary Strongholds or Contracts.

Found In Merc Caches

Modern Warfare 3 - Loot Caches
You can find Gas Masks inside Loot Caches, particularly in Merc Caches. Although Gas Masks are a rare loot, searching for Merc Caches is still worth your time since you do not have to deal with Mercenaries to obtain a Gas Mask.

How to Use Gas Mask

Automatically Equipped

Modern Warfare 3 - Gas Mask Equipped
Picking up a Gas Mask will automatically equip the item. This allows you to breathe and prevents damage over time from the poison while you are inside Infested Strongholds.

Using the Gas Mask Lowers Durability

Modern Warfare 3 - Durabilty
The durability of your Gas Mask will slowly decrease every second that you are using it inside an Infested Stronghold. You can monitor the Gas Mask's durability on the lower left side of the screen beside your Armor Plates or by hovering over the Gas Mask in your Rucksack. Do note that once the durability reaches zero, the Gas Mask will be automatically destroyed and gone forever.
