Weapon rarity determines additional bonus damage effect in Zombies Mode of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (MW3). Read on to learn different weapon rarity effects and how to upgrade weapon rarity.

Weapon Rarity Explained
Weapon Rarity Affects Additional Bonus Damage
Each weapon's rarity is distinguished by the color overlay of the gun. Depending on the rarity of the weapon, it may have an additional bonus damage effect that is crucial for eliminating enemies in high-threat zones. In total, there are six types of rarity available in zombies mode.
Weapon Rarity Bonus Damage Effects

| Uncommon | Green | 50% Bonus Damage |
| Rare | Blue | 100% Bonus Damage |
| Epic | Purple | 200% Bonus Damage |
| Legendary | Orange | 300% Bonus Damage |
| Wonder | Yellow | No Effect |
Contraband Weapon Downgrades Common
If you successfully exfiltrate a weapon with an Uncommon rarity or higher, its rarity will automatically downgrade to Common, retaining only the attachments of the contraband weapon.
How to Upgrade Rarity
Use Aether Tools
| Aether Tool Needed | Weapon Rarity Upgrade |
|---|---|
| Uncommon Aether Tool | Upgrades immediately to Uncommon (green) |
| Rare Aether Tool | Upgrades immediately to Rare (blue) |
| Epic Aether Tool | Upgrades immediately to Epic (purple) |
You can use Aether Tools to upgrade the rarity of your weapon, with the rarity outcome depending entirely on the Aether Tool used. You can obtain these Aether Tools from Loot Caches or by completing Contracts.
You Can Refund Upgrades in High Threat Zone
You can refund all weapon upgrades at the tombstone in the High Threat Zone. This will reset Weapon Rarity back to common (grey), as well as remove Ammo Mods and Pack-a-Punch levels.
