Post-Credit Scene and Ending Explained

Price Kills General Shepherd

MW3 Post Credit Scene

In the post credit scene, Price ultimately decides to kill General Shepherd as Shepherd continues to cause trouble for Price—even going back to the events of Modern Warfare 2. Price might've sought to take the extreme measure of killing Shepherd due to the death of Soap, one of his most trusted allies and toughest members of Task Force 141, who died in pursuit of stopping Makarov and his terrorist attack during the Trojan Horse mission.

Shepherd's lack of interest in confirming Makarov's death after the joint operation during the Danger Close campaign hints that Shepherd may be conspiring with Makarov to fulfill his own plans, which forces Price to execute him in his office.

Of course, Shepherd in the original 2009 Modern Warfare did betray Task Force 141 by killing Ghost and Soap and 2022's Modern Warfare 2 showed literal shades of that reappearing (via Shepherd's name turning red when discussing the traitor Graves with Price).

What Happens Next?

MW3 Mid Credit Scene

The twist in the Modern Warfare story takes the reboot trilogy even further away from the original Modern Warfare trilogy. We'll have to wait for a possible sequel to explore the weight and consequences of Price's actions, as well as the loose end of Makarov still being on the run.

There has been no official statement regarding a Modern Warfare 4, so take it with a grain of salt. The developers could also introduce another co-op campaign to continue the story instead, as they did with Modern Warfare 2's Atomgrad Raid missions.
