Manually upgrading through the Armoury is the fastest way to level up characters by far. Only two items are needed for this: Coins, which are the game's basic currency, and Combat Melodies. The latter can be acquired via daily Memos, the Bard's Tome, and some side quests, but your primary source will be Hedge Commissions, straightforward challenge arenas unlocked shortly into the main questline.
A single run early will net you enough Combat Melodies to up a brand-new character a few levels, but Hedge Commissions scale with your character and make excellent farms. You can select the difficulty of these commissions, featuring enemies at level 10, 20, 30, and so on. At higher difficulties, these commissions will reward you with higher tier Combat Melodies that provide much more EXP.
Like with standard leveling up, the best way to have your characters undergo Ascension fast is through farming Exploration ∞ commissions. What sets these commissions apart from the standard is that they provide Ascension materials and are endless, allowing you to clear levels back-to-back, with each wave increasing in difficulty and reward quantity.

While repeatedly completing commissions is a viable way of racking up Combat Melodies and Ascension materials, the way to truly unlock these dungeons' farming potential is through the use of Commission Manuals.
Commission Manuals come in four volumes and can be selected before embarking on each commission. What these consumable items do is that they significantly increase the rewards gained from each run, with the lowest-tier Combat Manual already providing a 100% increase.
Commission Manuals can be obtained through quests and the shop. Furthermore, you can also use your lower-tier ones to forge higher-tier Commission Manuals, though the Coin costs for each volume increases exponentially.

Main quests and side quests both provide character EXP upon completion. More importantly, quests are a great source for Trial EXP, contributing to your Trial Rank, which acts as your account's overall level. Towards the mid-game, Trial Rank will be your main bottleneck for leveling up your characters, as you cannot have them undergo Ascension without reaching certain milestones.

| Ascension Level | Level Cap | Trial Rank Required | Demon Wedge Slots |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 20 | 1 | 4 |
| 1 | 30 | 15 | 5 |
| 2 | 40 | 25 | 6 |
| 3 | 50 | 35 | 7 |
| 4 | 60 | 45 | 8 |
| 5 | 70 | 55 | 9 |
| 6 | 80 | 55 | 9 |
Characters can be upgraded until level 20 before requiring Ascension to raise the level cap. From hereon, characters will need to be ascended every 10 levels.
While each level cap can be seen as goalpost to reach, avoid lingering at these levels for too long as any EXP gained through combat or quests will go to waste.
You shouldn't feel the need to horde Combat Melodies and other resources like Ascension Materials. While characters do receive a decent amount of EXP through quests and combat, choosing to level up primarily through this method is terribly inefficient.
Leveling resources are easily farmable through commissions in the early to mid-game. Feel free to use your resources on characters you enjoy using or you regularly summon as a combat partner. Just don't try maxing out every single character on a whim, as you'll find yourself starved for resources when you really need them.

If you're feeling out-leveled or underpowered, and you're having a hard time leveling up for whatever reason, look to other ways of powering up your character.
You may be at the proper level for the quest or area, but it's possible that you've neglected another part of the equation. Consider leveling up your weapons, equipping and upgrading better Demon Wedges, or retooling your party and loadouts.
