Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (TTYD) is filled with hidden secrets and mechanics that you may not know of. Read on to discover some of the secrets in the game, as well as learn some useful combat tips to give you the edge in battles!
Paper Mario TTYD has a few secret bosses that you can fight along the way. To challenge them, you first need to do several things, ranging from provoking certain enemies, fighting your way through the Pit of 100 Trials, or reaching the post game.
During the prologue, a Bandit will run past Mario and steal 50 of his coins.
You can get these back from the bandit himself if you visit his house found left of the area behind Rogueport's plaza.
Prologue: A Rogue's Welcome Walkthrough
Equipping multiple badges of the same type will make their effects stack. For example, equipping a badge that give Mario new moves will increase its damage, at the cost of requiring more Flower Points per use.

The L Emblem and W Emblem Badges change Mario's clothes to the colors of Luigi and Wario's clothes respectively. However, if you equip both badges, Mario's clothes will change to Waluigi's purple clothing!
Do note that these badges do not affect Mario's stats, so you're free to equip it if you want to change the color of Mario's clothes.
If you sleep at any inn in the game for a total of 50 times, you will get a gift of 200 coins. A special cutscene will also play!
Lumpy is an NPC in Rogueport who will ask Mario to give him coins to invest for something.
Mario can give Lumpy coins three times, from the prologue until the start of Chapter 4. After completing Chapter 6, Lumpy will return a set amount of coins, depending on how much was invested before.
It is recommended to give Lumpy coins thrice, as you will actually get a huge profit from it!
You can sell your items from any of the main shops in the game, but do note that each shop has different sell prices for some items.
Yoshi, who will become your partner during Chapter 3, can have different colors after he hatches from his egg which depends on how long you have spent with the egg upon getting it in the Hot Dog Stand.
If you want a specific color for your Yoshi, you can time when it hatches by saving at a specific point in the game and waiting.
Do note that once Yoshi hatches and you save the game, you will not be able to change its color anymore.
After competing Chapter 3, you can challenge all of the Glitz Pit combatants via exhibition matches.
You can also challenge a new secret boss from this feature!
Glitz Pit Collectibles, Enemies, and Points of Interest
You will be able to fight in exhibition matches in the Glitz Pit after completing Chapter 3. If you defend your title against Rawk Hawk in an exhibition match, you can easily get 50 coins upon every win.
During Chapter 7 in the X-Naut Fortress, there is a room in the second basement floor where Mario and his partner can turn into 8-bit sprites in the overworld.
However, this only persists inside the room, and you will turn back to normal if you go out.
X-Naut Fortress Collectibles, Enemies, and Points of Interest
After completing the game, you can talk to TEC-XX inside the X-Naut Fortress. TEC is the super-computer who helped Peach during her intermission levels.
Aside from Action Commands, Mario and his partners' moves all have additional Stylish Move inputs. These will excite the audience and give Mario Star Power, which is used to fill up the meter for special moves.
If you want to always have enough juice to use special moves during battle, try to always input Stylish Moves to consistently charge up Star Power.
Sometimes during a battle, audience members can throw rocks that will damage either Mario or his partner. You can stop this from happening by pressing the X button when an audience member is shown to be holding a rock.
Do note that the audience may also throw items that you can use during fights, so make sure to look at what the audience is holding first before stopping them!
Flurrie's Gale Force can blow away enemies and instantly defeat them. You will still get Star Points whenever you defeat an enemy this way, so try using the move whenever you can.
The Danger Mario build fits Mario with pinch badges whose effects activate when he has only 5 HP or below.
These pinch badges, like Mega Rush and Last Stand, increases Mario's attack and defense capabilities at low health.
Do take note that this can make the game very easy, and may alter the intended way to experience the game's battles.
Amazy Dayzees, which can appear in Twilight Trail or in the Pit of 100 Trials, give a lot of Star Points when you defeat them. These enemies will run away after your first turn, so try defeating them immediately with your most powerful attacks.
