Guard and Superguard are defensive action commands that you can do in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (TTYD). Read on to learn how to perform these defensive actions and when to do them!
To do a Guard, simply press A before an enemy attack lands on your character.
Some enemy attacks can be more complicated to defend against. It is important to do standard Guards first until you are comfortable with the enemy's timing. You must properly time this action just before an attack lands. Repeatedly pressing A will not help you do a Guard.
Using Guard reduces the amount of damage inflicted from enemy attacks. Successful Guards will also protect you from status conditions like Poison or Dizziness.
You will be unable to block while inflicted with a negative status condition such as Sleep or Frozen.
Enemies like Fuzzies will use suction attacks on Mario and drain his HP.
Press the A button as they leave after attacking.

To perform a Superguard, you must press the B button exactly as an enemy attack lands on your character.
Doing a Superguard can be more difficult than a regular Guard because of its stricter timing, but it is more rewarding.
A successful Superguard can completely negate an opponent's attack and it will deal damage to it.
Defensive action commands are options that can help you mitigate incoming damage or effects from enemies.
Avoiding unnecessary damage can help keep your characters healthy and can help you win battles more consistently.
You can make Mario even more defensive by using Guard and Superguard in combination with badges like Damage Dodge which increases Mario's defense after a successful Guard.
