Lumpy is a rat in Rogueport that asks for Mario's coin as an investment in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (TTYD). Read on for a complete guide on Lumpy's investments, and know if you should give your coins to Lumpy!

Starting from the game's prologue, Lumpy in Rogueport will ask you to give him 100 coins to fund his search for oil. This may seem like a big amount, but you'll be able to profit from it once he returns your coins.

You can give Lumpy up to 300 coins in total. After that, he will not ask for more and will thank you for helping him.
Lumpy will accept investments until Chapter 4, so you have a lot of time and chances to earn up to 300 coins if you want the maximum investment.
Defeating a chapter's boss will also now give you 100 coins as a reward, so you can use these to give to Lumpy.
Chapter 4: For Pigs the Bell Tolls Walkthrough
After Chapter 6, Lumpy will return to Rogueport. He will then give you coins based on how much you've invested before he leaves.
| Total Coins Invested | Coins Returned | |
|---|---|---|
| 100 coins | → | 300 |
| 200 coins | → | 500 |
| 300 coins | → | 999 |
Chapter 6: 3 Days of Excess Walkthrough

It is recommended to fully invest in Lumpy, as you will get a lot of coins once he gets back from his own journey and returns your share of coins.
You do not need to pour all your coins immediately as you play through the game's early chapters because you have some time to earn coins while also saving some for your own use. The best way to do this is to meet Lumpy after you complete a story chapter and give him 100 coins during each visit.

You can find Lumpy in Rogueport, near the docks. Lumpy is on the eastern side of the area, standing near the boat mode panel.
