All is revealed towards the end of Chapter 3

Match Rulesets and Mechanics

Ranked Matches

Paper Mario TTYD Switch Remake - Mario at Rank 11

Participating in a Ranked Match allows Mario to climb through the ranks of the Glitz Pit. Ranked Matches require you to fulfill promoter requests where Mario or his partner will be asked to do something specific. Winning the match while fulfilling this request will allow The Great Gonzales to raise his rank.

Climb Through the Ranks Again After Chapter 3

After the events of Chapter 3, when you go back to the Glitz Pit, you will have to start back at Rank 20. When Mario asks Jolene about this, she will say she lost Mario's paperwork, which is why he has to start from the bottom again.

Exhibition Matches

Paper Mario TTYD Switch Remake - Exhibition Match

Along with Ranked Matches, Mario can also participate in Exhibition Matches against any opponent ranked below him once he's a registered fighter. These matches are straigtforward battles that do not require you to fulfill any promoter request.

This is a good way to rematch enemies you may not have registered in your Tattle Log. You can also use this mode to fight against teams you normally won't get to fight such as the Wings of Night and The Destructors before they leave for good after chapter 3.

Take note that after chapter 3, your rank will be reset to Rank 20, preventing you from challenging anyone in Exhibition Matches until you climb the ranks again.
