You will get a Game Over screen when Mario's HP reaches 0. Upon resuming the game, you'll start at your last save.
Your HP can reach 0 not only from battle, but also from map gimmicks, so be sure to recover HP as often as possible to avoid getting your HP down to 0.
You will now have the option to Try Again. Choosing this option will send you back on the section of the map you were in, not from your last save location.
This option was not available in the original version of the game.
The Life Shroom will revive your character with 10 HP once their HP reaches 0 during battle. It is a good idea to always have at least one on hand just in case.
Life Shrooms can be purchased at Westside Goods in the west part of Rogueport, at the Twilight Shop in Twilight Town, rewarded for obtaining 150 shop points, and obtained in various overworld locations.
When a partner's HP reaches 0, they will be down and unable to do actions. If a partner's HP reaches 0 while Mario still has HP, the game will not go to Game Over, however you will be at a disadvantage.
Be sure to switch out downed partners for healthy ones!
