Each time Mario levels up in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (TTYD), he'll have the option to increase one of three attributes. Read on to learn the best level up bonus to take, all level up bonuses, and what level up bonuses do!
List of Contents
In the early game, we recommend putting points into HP and raise to 20-30. This should be sufficient enough to prevent Mario from dying instantly from attacks. As the game progresses, we recommend occasionally raising HP.
Since Mario's attack and defense power can only be increased with badges, it's best to prioritize putting points into BP and equip badges that increase Mario's attack and defense.
The FP can often be recovered together with HP recover, so it's a good idea to raise it to around 20 to make room for moves that consume FP.
As long as Mario has enough BP, he can equip multiple badges of the same type at the same time.
Equipping multiple badges that increase Mario's attack power will allow him to defeat enemies in one hit, so it's best to increase BP as much as possible when leveling up.

Final Stats | HP: 145 | FP: 200 | BP: 99 |
Here is our recommended level up bonus progression for the first ten (10) levels. After level 10, it's best to first max out BP, then go for FP with occasional HP. The final stats at level 99 with this progression will be: 145 HP, 200 FP, and 99 BP.
It's also possible not to take HP at all, since there's a badge that makes Mario stronger when his HP is 5 or below, Power Rush. This tactic is very powerful as it allows Mario to deal heavy damage.
Mario can pay Chet Rippo, in Rogueport Sewers, 39 coins to reassign his HP, FP, and BP. However, it's important to note that it requires 39 coins for each stat adjust for each level up.
Rogueport Sewers Collectibles, Enemies, and Points of Interest
You can reach Chet Rippo after Chapter 5 by using Admiral Bobbery to blow up a cracked wall to the west of the Rogueport warp pipe. This will reveal a warp pipe that will take you to the background towards Chet Rippo's house.
Chapter 5: The Key to Pirates Walkthrough
Leveling up Heart Points (HP) increases Mario's maximum health, allowing him to take more hits during fights.
As the game progresses and battles become harder, having sufficient amount of health will help Mario and his party survive long enough to win them.
Leveling up Badge Points (BP) increases the amount of badges that can be equipped.
Badges are special equipment that give Mario new moves to use in battle or buff him or his party member. They can be purchased from merchants, obtained from chests, or dropped by enemies when defeated.
Since certain moves consume Flower Points (FP) , increasing FP enables Mario and his party to use more moves that consume FP during battles.
Upon leveling up, players can choose one of three (3) bonuses to upgrade: Heart Points (HP), Flower Points (FP), or Badge Points (BP).
These bonuses increase Mario and his party's maximum health, allows them to use more moves that consume FP, and expand the number of badges that can be equipped, respectively.
Generally, level up bonuses improve Mario and his party's performance during battles, making it easier to win them.
However, since there are plenty ways to build Mario and his party via level up bonuses, it's important for players to have a solid idea of what they want out of the game, considering things like playstyle and difficulty.
Mario's attack or defense does not change at all when he levels up.
Although Mario's partners can benefit from his increased BP and FP, they do not directly get any bonuses whenever Mario collects enough Star Points to level up.
However, all of his party members can be upgraded by giving Merlon three Shine Sprites for every character you want to upgrade.
Merlon can be found beside Professor Frankly's house in Rogueport.

Leveling up HP does not increase your partners HP at all, only Mario's. The only way to increase your partners HP is to level them up using Shine Sprites with Merlin. Also I definitely wouldn't recommend leveling up HP so much early on. Going to 30 HP so early is definitely not needed.
