The Audience plays an important role during battles in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (TTYD). They can hurt or help Mario and his party while battling foes. Read on to learn the Audience mechanic, how to attack the Audience, and more!
List of Contents
Whenever the audience gets excited during battles, the party gains Star Power. Star Power is recovered by performing Stylish Moves, which are extra inputs done while executing the move. Using the Appeal tactic can also recover Star Power.
Star Power allows characters to use Special Moves. These moves can deal great damage to opponents or heal and buff Mario and his party member.
The more thrilling the battles are, the more people will come to watch the fight. The number of audience members is displayed at the bottom-left corner of the screen during battles.
A Bingo! is an event that happens during battle after successfully executing multiple Action Commands resulting in positive boosts.
The number of audience members will not exceed the theater's maximum capacity, however.
The more people there are in the audience, the faster the party's Star Power will refill.
The size of the audience or seating capacity of the theater differs for each theater. Every 10 levels, Mario will receive a new theater with greater seating capacity and a different look, allowing for faster replenishment of Star Power.
Audience members can sometimes throw stuff onto the stage. This can either be useful items that may help the party win the battle or rocks that damage the party.
When the X Button appears below the party, it means an audience member is about to throw something onstage.
Mario's Level | Star Level | Stage | Max Audience |
---|---|---|---|
1 - 9 | Rising Star | Gym | 50 |
10 - 19 | B-List Star | Small Theater | 100 |
20 - 29 | A-List Star | Large Theater | 150 |
30 - 99 | Superstar | Opera Theater | 200 |
Raising Mario's level will result in changes to the battle stage, including the maximum audience capacity.
Quickly scan the crowd and press the X Button if there are objects that could be hazardous to the party. The active character will then go to the audience and bonk the troublemaker. Some examples of hazardous items are rocks and bones.
If someone in the audience is about to throw a useful item, simply ignore the button prompt. This item can be of great help for Mario in the battle.
Successfully performing action commands by pressing the A Button with proper timing will get the audience excited and Mario and his party will get Star Power
However, if players fail to execute action commands, Mario and his party won't receive any Star Points and may not deal any damage to enemies.
In addition to action commands, pressing the A Button with a specific timing for each move allows Mario and his party to perform stylish moves. Successfully doing stylish moves will excite the audience even more, giving Mario and his party more Star Power.
Using the appeal tactic allows Mario and his party to receive Star Power from the audience. However, Mario and his party won't be able to do any other actions as using appeal will consume the entire turn.
