This is a guide on the Plane Mode in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (TTYD). Read on to learn how to use Plane Mode, tips on using the Plane Mode, and how to unlock the Plane Mode.

How to Use Plane Mode

Press the Y Button While on an Airplane Panel

Plane Mode can only be activated if Mario is on a airplane panel, which is a floor with a paper airplane drawn on it. Once on the plane panel, players need to press the Y button to initiate Plane Mode, transforming Mario into a paper airplane.

Plane Mode can be used indefinitely and without consuming any item, so if players want to go to an area that they can't cross by jumping, they just need to look for a plane panel.

Tilt the Control Stick to Change Direction

While Plane Mode is active, Mario will continuously float downward and at an angle. Players can't control Mario's acceleration, but they can change his direction by tilting the control stick, allowing Mario to travel farther.

Press the Y or B Button to Land

While flying, pressing the Y or B button will stop Mario from flying, and he will transform back into his normal form and land on the spot where he morphed back.

If players want to land on a specific spot, they should carefully control Mario's direction and time his landing by letting go of the control and letting him land on purpose.

Tips on Using the Plane Mode

Tilt the Control Stick Backwards to Fly Farther

The trick to flying far during Plane Mode is to tilt the control stick backwards every time Mario glides a little, making the airplane point upwards and rise slightly. By repeating the process of letting Mario glide a little, then tilting the control stick backward to make him rise, players can allow Mario to travel farther.

Time the Landing to Arrive on a Specific Spot

Since Mario will continuously move downward and at an angle, if players want to land on a specific spot, they should time the landing by carefully controlling Mario's direction, then simply letting go of the controls to let Mario descend deliberately and land on the ground.

How to Unlock Plane Mode

Obtain in the Prolouge

The Plane Mode is obtained when Mario opens a treasure chest in the Rogueport Sewers during the Prolouge. Mario will naturally come across the treasure chest as he progresses through the Prolouge, so there is no need for players to do some explorations anymore.
