Bring the Wunderwaffe for Crowd Control

The final boss arena will be packed full of acid hazards that slow you down and stop your HP regeneration. Due to the amount of zombies that the Z-Rex can spawn at the same time, you'll want to bring along a crowd control option in the form of the Wunderwaffe.

Do note that the free Wunderwaffe easter egg in the Shattered Veil requires quite a bit of legwork to secure. However, it'll be worth it to avoid getting mobbed by zombies during the boss fight since Decoys and LT53 Kazimirs can only do so much during this lengthy battle.

How to Get the Wunderwaffe DG-2

Use GobbleGums that Help with Survivability

Ammo won't be an issue during this fight since the zombies drop a generous amount of ammo packs when cleared out. Instead, bring along GobbleGums that help with survivability like Idle Eyes (to avoid getting swarmed) and Phoenix Up (so downed players retain their perks).

If you have Near Death Experience, you can also bring it along and pop it once the Z-Rex drops to 50% HP (since that's when the fight starts ramping up in difficulty). Reign Drops is also a good option if the team finds itself in a bad spot during the boss fight.

Focus on Survivability and Damage for Perks

With the loadout above, the perks you will want to have during the boss fight are mainly:

  • Jugger-Nog since the Z-Rex can one-shot you without it.
  • Stamin-Up since you'll be running away from the Z-Rex most of the time.
  • Deadshot Daiquiri for more critical damage (obtained from the Der Wunderfizz that spawns in at Round 25).

After, you can add in some more secondary perks such as Speed Cola for faster reloads (and slow ammo refill through Augments) and Quick Revive in case of emergencies (but ideally, you'll want to rely on your GobbleGums for revives with no perk penalties).

How to Beat the Z-Rex

Z-Rex Boss Fight Tips

Shoot the Z-Rex's Eyes or the Weak Points on its Sides

Throughout the entire fight, the only way to deal any significant amount of damage will be to shoot the Z-Rex's eyes or the glowing green weak spots on its sides. Make sure you and your squad aim for these weak points if you want to have any hope of beating the Z-Rex (especially during its difficult 50% HP phase).

Don't Stay too Close to the Z-Rex

The Z-Rex has a lot of AoE attacks that deal a ton of damage on hit and it will always attack the player closest to it. To avoid getting one-shot, make sure to keep kiting the Z-Rex since it can nuke your HP if you're too close to its front (chomp attack) or its back (tail swipe attack).

Also, look out for the Z-Rex's jump attack. This one has a massive AoE and it will fling you and your squadmates halfway across the arena if you aren't careful.

Avoid the Acid Puddles in the Boss Arena

During the boss fight, acid puddles will start spawning in, slowing and damaging any player that runs over them. Make sure to keep an eye out for these hazards especially when running away from the Z-Rex or when kiting mobs since these will interrupt and delay your HP regen.

Stay in the West Side of the Arena During Phase Transitions

Once the boss hits 75%, 50%, and 25% HP, it will do a phase transition where it jumps out of the arena. During this phase transition, it will be immune to damage while it rains acid into the arena. Stay in the west side of the arena to avoid the acid and the zombies it spawns.

Kill Acid Zombies First then Thin Out Regular Zombies

During the fight, the Z-Rex will be constantly moving around the arena, all while periodically summoning regular and acid zombies to help it.

Since you'll be kiting a lot, make sure to prioritize thinning out the zombies herds. Do it fast enough and you'll have periods where you can focus solely on damaging the Z-Rex before the next zombie herd is spawned.

When killing the zombies, take out the acid zombies first since you'll want the acid pools that they leave behind on death to go away sooner rather than later. Regular zombies can be killed en masse using the Wunderwaffe, or distracted using a Decoy or an LT53 Kazimir.

Save Aether Shroud for When the Z-Rex Drops to 50% HP

Once the Z-Rex drops to 50% health, it will start running at you and your squad. This aggressive version of the boss can be tough to deal with, especially if you and your squad no longer have Near Death Experience or Phoenix Up handy.

During this final phase, use Aether Shroud to focus dealing damage on the Z-Rex's weak spots while your Wunderwaffe holder focuses on thinning out the herd of zombies that spawns. This is also a good time to pop Reign Drops or Free Fire for easy damage.
