The Balmung Void Sword is the best Bastard Sword upgrade to you can obtain and use. Its charged attack opens up a vortex that has an area of effect that sucks and instantly kills or teleports any Zombies (except elites) that are near it.
This is really useful for managing hordes of Zombies, and it can be used to easily get out of a pinch when you find yourself getting swarmed.

The Balmung Void Sword takes the spot as the best Bastard Sword upgrade because of its stellar area of effect charged attack that spawns a vortex that sucks in and instantly kills or teleports Zombies (except elites) that get near it. It does not matter if they are in front, behind, or at the sides — they will get killed or teleported by the vortex.
How to Get the Balmung Void Sword
The Caliburn Dragon's Fire Sword is a very close second to the Balmung Void Sword. It also has an area of effect charged attack that shoots a fireball. But, the area of effect is limited to the blast radius of that fireball and will only kill Zombies in front of you. It can also damage you if you do not have the PhD Flopper perk.
How to Get the Caliburn: Dragon's Fire Sword
The Durendal Electric Sword is the third best because of its charged attack that fires a lightning bolt and damages Zombies in a straight line in front of you. This is a good charged attack, similar to the effect of the Dark Flare, but is not as flexible as the area of effect damage that the first two Bastard Sword upgrades provide.
How to Get Durendal Electric Sword
The Solais Lion of Light Sword goes at the bottom of the ranking because of its lackluster charged attack. It surrounds the player with a swirling light that damages Zombies around you and protects you from attacks for a few seconds.
However, the Light Sword has a unique passive: When it is fully charged, attacking Zombies will slightly recover your armor.
