When using an Ascendant Floret, we recommend getting the next superboon if it fits the hero. If not, consider what stat your hero needs most.
The best IVs for Gilliam are +Def and -Spd. Def is Gilliam's most important stat, being the basis for Frelian Lance's Atk/Def penalty application.
As an armored unit, especially one with Savior, Gilliam is at peak potential when used an enemy phase attacker. As such, his Spd isn't as important as any of his other stats. It can be safely taken as a bane.
We recommend +Def when merging Gilliam up to +10 for similar reasons above. His Def is his most important stat and should be maximized as much as possible.

Gilliam is a close physical attacker (range = 1). Therefore, when not accounting for the Weapon Triangle, the amount of damage he deals will be equivalent to his Atk minus the foe's Def stat.
Gilliam's Frelian Lance provides the Iote's Shield effect of neutralizing bow weakness of flying units to nearby flying allies at the start of each turn.
This is a great and unique effect, allowing your flying units to equip other skills instead of Iote's Shield, increasing their overall bulk against enemy bow units. While this effect may not be amazing for offensive and frail flying units, other flying units like Ninja Laegjarn with her high bulk and Embla with her damage reduction all appreciate this effect.
In combat, Frelian Lance has the Spendthrift effect of increasing Gilliam's Atk while decreasing his foe's Atk, and it also inflicts an Atk/Def penalty onto his foe equal to 20% of Gilliam's Def and applies 40% damage reduction to his foe's first attack in combat.
This exclusive weapon improves Gilliam's defensive prowess while providing support at the same time.
Gilliam takes 1.5x damage from armor-effective weapons like Slaying Hammer+, Randgríðr, or Thani, and one blow from this type of weapon is sure to take him down. Make sure you know what weapons you are up against before hopping too far into the line of battle!
