+Def/-Spd

We recommend a +Def/-Spd IV for Benny. His Def is a superboon and his main role is to soak damage for his allies. A +Res boon is also acceptable if you anticipate receiving mixed damage. His Spd is beyond salvageable, thus it is safe to take as a bane.

+Def for a +10 Merge

We recommend taking +Def as your boon of choice when building a +10 merged Benny. Further increasing his Def plays to his strengths and keeps him healthy throughout multiple engagements.

How to Use, Explanation

This build uses Benny as a defensive tank in the front lines. Vengeful Fighter gives Benny a follow-up attack and special acceleration to allow him to retaliate with Ignis on his follow-up attack to deal massive damage. Courtly Candle's damage reduction helps sustain Benny for multiple engagements.

How to Use, Explanation

This build uses Benny as a Near Save tank to shield the team from physical attacks. Sturdy Stance 3 boosts Benny's Atk and Def while providing a Guard effect to prevent foes from activating special skills. Crafty Fighter 3 gives Benny a guaranteed follow-up attack on enemy phase.

Benny is a close physical attacker (range = 1). Therefore, when not accounting for the Weapon Triangle, the amount of damage he deals will be equivalent to his Atk minus the foe's Def stat.

Benny Strengths

Steadfast Lance+ makes sure Benny's Atk/Def is at optimal levels

A Sword Flier dealing no damage to Benny

Steadfast Lance+ grants him +5 Atk/Def and neutralizes penalties to Atk/Def if he is within 2 spaces of an ally. These bonuses work on both phases and the trigger condition is very simple so this is a very reliable skill to have.

This, of course, synergizes with Pavise and Bracing Stance 2 to mitigate tons of damage.

Wary Fighter 3 blocks follow-up attacks

The bane of Benny's defenses is his low Spd. This makes him susceptible to follow-up attacks, but Wary Fighter blocks follow-up attacks as long as Benny's HP is at or more than 50%.

One of Benny's defense mechanisms is Wary Fighter 3. This patches up his susceptibility to follow-up attack due to his low Spd. However, skills like Null Follow-Up counters that.

Armored movement!

Benny enjoys the high stats of an armored unit, but this means that he suffers from armored movement as well. Without the use of proper Sacred Seals like Armored Boots and skills like Armored March 3, he will be crippled by very limited movement. It will be most likely that the enemy will get to him first before he is able to initiate.

Weak to Armor Effective Weapons

Benny takes 1.5x damage from armor-effective weapons like Slaying Hammer+ and Thani, and one blow from this type of weapon is sure to take him down. Make sure you know what weapons you are up against before hopping too far into the line of battle!
