Sea-Sear Lance Might: 16　 Range: 1 Accelerates Special trigger (cooldown count-1). If foe initiates combat or if foe's HP ≥ 75% at start of combat, inflicts Atk/Def-6 on foe during combat, and also, if foe can make a follow-up attack, reduces damage from foe's first attack during combat by 75%.

+Atk/-Spd

The best IVs for Pirate Surtr are +Atk and -Spd. Pirate Surtr has the highest base Atk in the game (as of August 2021); investing in his Atk will prove to be beneficial in clearing maps. +Def or +Res are also useful IVs to improve his overall bulk. His Spd is a dump stat and is beyond salvageable despite being a Superboon, thus it is safe to take as a bane.

+Atk for a +10 Merge

We recommend a +Atk IV when merging Pirate Surtr to +10 for similar reasons. +Def or +Res are also good options when looking to maximize bulk instead of raw attacking power.

How to Use, Explanation

This budget build retains Def/Res Ideal 4 to maximize Surtr's enemy phase bulk in lieu of having Distant Counter. Mystic Boost seal helps keep Surtr within the HP threshold for both Crafty Fighter and Def/Res Ideal.

How to Use, Explanation

This build foregoes stat buffs on Surtr's A slot to allow him to counterattack at any range with Distant Counter. Mystic Boost seal keeps Surtr in the Crafty Fighter threshold.

How to Use, Explanation

Valentine's Gustav & Pirate Surtr's weapon are identical. Their stats are identical too so Pirate Surtr can run D/R Near Save 3 as effectively as Valentine's Gustav! Besides the color differences, the difference will be minimal! Of course you can also run other Save skills, but D/R Near Save is your best bet for Pirate Surtr. Steady Breath accelerates his Special cooldown charges to be able to activate Bonfire every time Surtr attacks.

Pirate Surtr is a close physical attacker (range = 1). Therefore, when not accounting for the Weapon Triangle, the amount of damage he deals will be equivalent to his Atk minus the foe's Def stat.

Pirate Surtr's kit revolves around boosting himself and debuffing his opponent whenever he is attacked.

His weapon not only accelerates his Special, it inflicts Atk/Def -6 on enemies during combat and reduces their damage if they are able to double him.

Surtr's new C skill inflicts Atk/Spd/Def/Res-5 on the closest enemy units if he's within 4 spaces of one of them.

He'll also grant himself Atk/Spd/Def/Res+5, further increasing his bulk.

Pirate Surtr's kit revolves around boosting himself and debuffing his opponent whenever he is attacked.

His other skills make the mechanic more viable as they increase his ability to take attacks in the enemy phase:

• Def/Res Ideal 4 grants Def/Res+9 when he has an existing buff on him or if he has full HP.
• Crafty Fighter inflicts Special Cooldown charge -1 on enemy units and grants him a guaranteed follow-up attack when they initiate combat.

In most situations, attacking him is a punishment as he will give massive debuffs and make himself so bulky no one will be able to get a hit in on him.

Pirate Surtr Weaknesses

No Distant Counter and Armor Unit

As an armored unit, Pirate Surtr is restricted by his movement, but this could be remedied if paired with a team using Armor March 3.

Alternatively, you can always give him the Armored Boots Sacred Seal.

Without Distant Counter built into his kit, he has no way to retaliate against enemy units who can just chip away at his HP by kiting him.

Weak to Armor Effective Weapons

Pirate Surtr takes 1.5x damage from armor-effective weapons like Slaying Hammer+ or Thani.

Pirate Surtr carries both Def/Res Ideal 4 and Crafty Fighter 3 as good skills available to inherit to other heroes. While both of these are good skills, they aren't worth foddering off a copy of Pirate Surtr. Crafty Fighter 3 is available on other heroes and as a Divine Code, and Def/Res Ideal 4 isn't exactly the best A skill to inherit.
