Is Jack Chaos?

Yes and, also Not yet

Final Fantasy Origin - Stranger of Paradise - Jack Garland

Jack's true identity is Garland; meaning he is Chaos, but he also isn't Chaos, at least not yet. In the timeline of Stranger of Paradise, the Jack Garland we portray at the beginning of the game is already a resetted version of the original Jack Garland. Nearing the end of your playthrough, Jack learns that he was a former Senior Agent working for the Lufenians sent forth to control Cornelia and the world.

Jack Inevitably Becomes Chaos

Stranger of Paradise - Is Jack Chaos

When Jack tries to uncover his identity and his destiny, he learns that he was merely a pawn of the Lufenians. It was his companions' plan and intentions to break Jack from these shackles. In his quest for revenge against the Lufenians, Jack absorbs the Soul of Chaos from the Darkness Manifest to become Chaos itself. We then learn that Jack is then pulled back through the fabrics of time to 2000 years in the past. This is when Jack decides to fully take on the mantle of Chaos.

This sets the stage for what is to become the game that is Final Fantasy 1.

Jack Characteristics

A Man on a Mission

Jack

Jack only knows one thing – he is driven to kill Chaos. The announcement trailer for the game drills this home to the point that killing Chaos became a short-lived internet meme.

It's arguable that it is intentional just how focused Jack is on his mission, to the extent of forgetting everything else in his life. This may be to illustrate that Jack is on the verge of madness, or some might say, on the verge of chaos.

At least in the past, it seems that he had a relationship with Princess Sarah, and even gave her his Crystal. Jack may not have always been the Chaos-obsessed character he is during the events of the story.

Expert Combatant

Jack has access to all 28 Jobs in the game allowing him to equip two jobs at any given point in any mission, whereas his companions are restricted to certain jobs and can only equip one job at a time unless you play on multiplayer. Whether it be swords or spears, his fists or his magic, this allows Jack to seamlessly switch back and forth from pre-assigned jobs to always have the upper hand in any battle.

Jack Abilities

Lightbringer

Activate Lightbringer

Lightbringer is one of Jack's unique abilities allowing him to gain a temporary boost in attack power in exchange for portions of his MP bar. This ability sends off a powerful shockwave that pushes enemies back giving Jack the window of opportunity he needs whenever he's backed into a corner.

Soul Shield is an ability that allows Jack to absorb special attacks from enemies. Special attacks will appear on top of enemies' heads with a purple border, these attacks can be absorbed by the Soul Shield giving Jack a bit of his MP back and the opportunity to use his enemies' power against them.

Soul Burst

Soul Burst Effect

Soul Burst is another one of Jack's unique abilities. This ability gives Jack the power to crystallize his enemies and destroy them completely. This rather violent attack also lets Jack regain his MP after shattering his crystallized enemies.
