Is Stranger of Paradise A Remake or Prequel?

A New Story Based on Final Fantasy I

In an interview held with Producers Tetsuya Nomura, Jin Fujiwara, and Director Daisuke Inoue back in 2021, it was clarified that Stranger of Paradise would neither be a sequel, prequel, or a remake of the first Final Fantasy game.

Despite the direct references to events, locations, and even subtle hints, Stranger of Paradise is designed around the "motif" of Final Fantasy I and is an entirely different and new story based seemingly around the structure of the original game.

Possible Role of Main Characters

Characters in a Medieval World

As hinted by Nomura in the same interview, Garland and Chaos from the original game have capabilities of bending time, managing to come back again and again to wreak havoc and destruction on the world repeatedly.

When asked if this part of the story has a bearing on Stranger of Paradise, Nomura explained that, indeed, this time bending ability due to the Chaos Shrine is part of the explanation of how and why Jack and his companions look like modern characters in a medieval world.

Playing as the Villain

In the same interview, it was discusses how the game's protagonist – Jack – and his allies are thematically "Strangers" in Paradise, a subtle hint about how, possibly, players will be taking on the role of the villain in the game.

In a blog post recently made on Playstation.blog, it was discussed that unlike past Final Fantasy titles, players will now have the chance to play as the villain in Stranger of Paradise's darker world.

Connections to Garland and Chaos

Garland and Chaos are both prominent characters in Final Fantasy I, with both occupying antagonist roles that players are meant to defeat as the "Warriors of the Light". With the premise that players will "play as the villain" in Stranger of Paradise, and outside of Jack becoming a villain in his own right, there is a possibility that Jack can become either of the two villains at some point in the game.

As hinted by Tetsuya Nomura in his interview, hints can be found in how the characters in the game are designed, giving both purpose and meaning to how characters appear and how such things play a role in the story of the game, with Jack's own armor bearing a subtle similarity to that of Garland's.
