Story A mode for players who don't usually play action games, want to breeze through battles, and are looking to enjoy the story.
Action A mode for players who are familiar with action games and enjoy challenging battles.
Hard A mode for players who excel at action games and wish to engage in brutal battles.
CHAOS A mode for those who have finished the story and seek an even more daunting challenge.

Difficulty Mode Differences

Story Mode and Casual Option

Story mode is the easiest mode of the game. This mode is perfect for players who are generally new to both the Final Fantasy franchise and the Action RPG genre altogether. Story mode will allow players to focus more on the progression of the story, while making combat easy, but not too easy.

Casual Mode Option

Casual mode is an extra option for story mode that offers the following changes from the Story difficulty:

Casual Mode Differences
  • Break Gauge consumption for Soul Shield and other abilities is decreased.
  • Unblockable attacks can be blocked.
  • Max MP is not decreased when falling in battle.
  • Fallen allies will automatically be revived

Casual mode cannot be activated during online play

Action Mode

Action mode is your standard normal mode, offering a balanced experience of gameplay and story immersion. For players already familiar with the genre, they will feel right at home with this difficulty.

Hard Mode

Hard mode is for players who are definitely looking for a beatdown. This difficulty comes with increased enemy damage and higher break gauges across the board and is tailored for seasoned veterans who want to test their skills to the limit

CHAOS Mode

About CHAOS Difficulty
CHAOS Mode acts as both the hardest difficulty in the game as well as a pseudo new game plus. When playing a mission on CHAOS difficulty, you cannot change to a lower difficulty from Cubes until the mission ends, at which point you can freely change difficulties again. In CHAOS Mode you can find the following:

CHAOS Mode Differences
  • Can increase the difficulty level of missions up to 300 by spending Anima Crystals.
  • Can raise the Job level cap to 99.
  • Leveling up gives Master Points which can be spent to raise stats.
  • You can now collect Artifacts with multiple Affinities.

How to Change Difficulties

Change From the Cube or World Map

The difficulty setting can be changed from the world map or at a Cube during a mission, however certain first time completion rewards for missions will vary depending on the difficulty you choose. When changing difficulty from a Cube during a mission, you can only change the difficulty to a lower difficulty, but you cannot switch back to a higher difficulty until the mission ends.

Cannot Change Difficulty Settings in CHAOS Mode

Take note that when playing on CHAOS Difficulty, you cannot change to a lower difficulty at Cubes, but will be able to freely change difficulties again once the mission ends.

It should be noted that casual mode doesn't work correctly. It's exactly the same as Story mode and the modifiers such as keeping your max MP aren't working.
