In order to block, players can simply hold L1 (PS) or RB (Xbox) to block enemy attacks. Blocking attacks is a dependable move to negate damage from any incoming attacks. It also significantly reduces the amount of break damage you will receive.

Unblockable Attacks

While most of the attacks you encounter in the game can easily be deflected by a Guard or Soul Shield, you will encounter attacks that cannot be blocked. These are aptly called Unblockable Attacks and they can be distinguished by the red aura when an enemy is channelling.

Learn Enemy Attacks

Swordfighter Shield Block
Blocking enemy attacks can be as simple as holding L1 when you see them about to land an attack. While this is true for enemies you encounter early on, enemies in later stages of the game will have more varied attack patterns as well as attacks that can chain multiple times. Take a second to assess your enemy before heading into combat.

Parrying

While holding block is the guaranteed way to prevent any incoming damage, a well timed block will result in a parry. Parries will not only prevent you from losing HP, but it will temporarily increase the recovery speed of your Break Gauge.
