Instant Abilities Build

Instant Abilities
The Thief Job is built around the simple concept of "stealing" from enemies. In Stranger of Paradise, "stealing" results in claiming Instant Abilities for your use in combat.

For this build, the focus will heavily be on the Steal Job Action, which takes an ability from an enemy and allows players to weave an Instant Ability into their combos, allowing for near seamless combat that can quickly jump from combo to combo.

  • Summon Tachi: Temporarily inscreases damage taken and damage dealt. Unlocked in the Samurai Job Tree.
  • Ruin: Releases a non-elemental magic attack in front of the player, sending enemies flying back. Use in emergency situations where enemy groups become too plentiful to handle properly.
  • Flee: Temporarily increases movement speed and break gauge recovery. Can be unlocked in the Thief Job Tree.

Passive and Effect Priorities

Best Passives and Effects
Spirit of ExecutionSpirit of Execution MugMug Swift SwipesSwift Swipes
  • Spirit of Execution: Enhances abilities set to the third Link, which is Wasp Sting in this case. When using Knuckle-type weapons, you can swap this ability with Magic from Might. Both abilities restore MP based on physical damage dealt.
  • Mug: Inflicts break damage against enemies on successful steal attempts.
  • Swift Swipes: Enhances abilities set to the first link, which is Bisect in this instance. This ability can be replaced with Vanguard's Stance when using Knuckle-type weapons. With this ability unlocked, any attacks in the first Link will have its attack speed enhanced.

Recommended Equipment Effects

Magic Damage Dealt ( + )
Soul Shield: MP Recovery ( + )

Agile Fighter Build

Agile Fighter
This build falls more closely with the basics of combat when it comes to Jobs that have Pugilist or Duelist as their base. This means a heavy focus on the use of Knuckle or Dagger type of weapons, MP Recovery, as well as having a general agility that allows players to dance around enemies.

These three focuses (weapon use, MP Recovery, and agility) are at the core of this build. With the Flee Ability available for the Thief Job, alongside Lunatic for faster attacks, players can freely run circles around their opponents while picking them off one by one.

  • Lunatic: Temporarily increases attack speed, but stops automatic break gauge recovery. Can be unlocked in the Berserker Job Tree.
  • Provoke: Temporarily reduces damage taken and makes enemies more likely to attack you. Unlocked in the Knight Job Tree. Use this only during instances where melee attacking enemies are the only available ones in an area to more easily collect instant abilities from them.

  • Critical Damage +2.4%: Increases the amount of critical damage a player can deal against enemies. Two of these buffs are available in the Job Tree for unlocking.
  • Drop Rate +2.0%: Increases the drop rate when felling enemies.
  • Instant Ability: Rarely Increases 17.3%: Increases the likelihood of capturing more uses of an instant ability.

Recommended Equipment Effects

Equipment Effects
MP Recovery Rate with Normal Attacks ( + )
Critical Damage ( + )
All Damage Dealt ( + )

As the focus of this build is more on making use of the player's fists or blades rather than turning an enemy's abilities against them, buffing Jack beyond the limits of what the Thief Job provides is a necessity. Take on Equipment Effects that gives boosts to his criticals on top of an increase to all forms of damage that he can conduct against enemies.

MP Recovery will also be a crucial aspect of this build, due in part to the heavy use of Command Abilities and Combos that will quickly drain a player's HP unless recovered at the same time as any Normal Attacks.

Best Job Synergies and Pairings

Bersker

BerserkerBerserker Available Weapon(s) Shield?
Greatsword
Axe
Cannot use shields
Basic Info The Berserker is one the tankiest damage output with access to both the greatsword and the axe. They also have the Berserk ability that temporarily increases their strength even further at the expense of the ability to use potions.

For players wishing for more damage output, the Berserker is the perfect Job. With the Lunatic Command Ability enabled, players can demolish opponents with fast strikes from the heavy and powerful weaponry available for a Berserker.

White Mage

White MageWhite Mage Available Weapon(s) Shield?
Mace
Can use shields
Basic Info The White Mage is a specialization of the Mage job class suited for support. White Mages have the ability to cast white magic which allows them to heal and revive fallen allies.

Players who like to run with fast hitting Jobs such as Thief or Monk may find that damage output per hit, while being more than decent, sometimes are not enough when faced with tougher enemies that are often "spongey".

To circumvent this small limitation, players can have White Mage as a Job pairing, harnessing the buffing powers of the White Mage to significantly buff the Thief's abilities. This allows for either a faster build, one with more powerful punches or Dagger attacks, or possibly even both.
