Memories of Water is one of the best missions to replay repeatedly for players looking to farm Anima Shards early on. Across the three original difficulties, players can earn up to 4, 4, and 5 Anima Shards per playthrough respectively.
What's great about this mission is that it can be accessed early on in the game, leaving players with enough time to make use of the shards before they unlock higher tier versions of Jobs they have come to favor.

The Suffering of Fools can be unlocked towards the latter end of the game's mid-way point. It offers some of the highest Anima Shard rewards on the game's base difficulties, making it a good prospect for farming when it comes to levelling up Advanced or Expert Jobs.

Azure Memories: The Rebel is regarded as being the best mission that players can farm Anima Shards in. Unlocked by compelting the Main Mission Memories of Water, this Side Mission is largely a fast and easy way of earning a large amount of Shards for use, due to the fact that it's primary objective can be completed in quick 5 to 10 minute bursts if players ignore the enemies in its level.
This is substantially faster than re-playing any of the Main Missions, as Side Missions generally tackle a several short areas in a level that make it easy for players to speed through with ease.

Earn From Level Progression
Anima Shards are largely deposited into your inventory when moving through an area. Certain sections of a level will provide the player with an Anima Shard – players can replay levels that they've finished before to earn Anima Shards whenever they wish by simply progressing through the level as normal.
Anima Shards can also be a listed reward for completing a Mission. Completing the Mission will yield the amount listed to the player. Note that you keep all loot even when abandoning a Mission, however you will miss out on the end rewards, so in most cases it's more efficient to finish the Mission to maximize the number of Anima Shards in the shortest time possible.
Defeat Optional Enemies
In levels that players unlock, there will be side paths, rooms, or even corridors that contain optional enemies that players can then choose to engage. In particular, Tonberries can drop Anima Shards if players can successfully defeat them – turning down the difficulty during farming sessions can help to make the farming process run quicker.
Optional enemies are usually found pretty late in any given level, so unfortunately defeating them for Anima Shards and selecting Abandon Mission to reset the level isn't very time efficient considering you would miss out on any Anima Shards from Mission rewards.

Joining Multiplayer games as the guest in a session will also help players earn more Anima Shards compared to normal, singleplayer play.

Anima Shard Uses
Item Used to Gain EXP for Jobs
The main use of an Anima Shard is to provide players with an expedient way of earning EXP with little effort. Each Anima Shard provides 4000 EXP to the player when used.
Depending on the amount of EXP needed to level up a Job, this is more than enough to level up a Job at least once, with the usefulness of Anima Shards gradually lessening the more a player levels up a Job which increases the amount of EXP required to bring it a level higher.
