Most of Chaos Advent's melee attacks can easily be blocked. During Phase 1, you can get into melee range and fight him without having to worry about too many unblockable attacks. That being said, he will still have some unblockable attacks during this Phase and even more during Phase 2. When you see him begin an animation, it's best to evade and wait out his attack before going back in.
Chaos Advent's Phase 2 will include a few more tricky attacks patterns. Watch out for Fiery Hold as this attack is unblockable and deals a ton of damage to you. You can avoid this waiting out the charging animation and evading to the side.
Chaos Advent's attacks are very reliant on the elements it uses. The Mage job is highly recommended for this boss battle as you can neutralize these effects by casting spells of the opposite element.
Ice Sword is an example of an attack that has an elemental aspect to it. Chaos Advent empowers his sword with ice and you can cast fire based spells like Firaga to deal a good amount of damage as well as negate the effects of his sword.

| Ice Attack | Chaos Advent takes a step back and launches shards of ice directly in front of him. |
| Chaos Bringer | Chaos Advent lets off a high damage melee-range AoE attack. |
| Blaze | Chaos Advent throws fire ball projectiles. |
| Ice Sword | Chaos Advent empowers his sword with ice. |
| Blizzaga | Chaos Advent strikes his ice-empowered sword and performs an AoE ice blast. |
| Fiery Hold | Chaos Bringer charges and dashes towards you, performing an unblockable grab attack. |
