Mage Knight Build

Mage Knight
This build capitalizes on Red Mage's ability to make use of Swords. It is recommended that magic be used in this instance in between melee combos of the build, or prior to engaging in close quarters combat with an enemy.

Defensively, this build is also great in that it allows players to use their shields to block strikes, counterattacking whenever they can with either a sword or their magic. Fair warning however: even if Red Mage can cast both White and Black Magic, they do not have the same strength compared to if they were used by White or Black Mages.

  • Lunatic: Unlocked in the Berserker Job Tree, Lunatic buffs the player's attack speed beyond normal parameters, allowing for faster strikes against the enemy.
  • Zanshin: Unlocked in the Samurai Job Tree, this ability reduces the amount of MP used whenever using abilities. Useful when weaving in spells in between melee-based Combo Abilities.
  • Mighty Strikes: Unlocked in the Warrior Job Tree, Mighty Strikes enhances the power behind each and every one of the player's attacks for a temporary period.

Passive and Effect Priorities

Best Passives and Effects
BladeBlade's Blessing Will of the BladeWill of the Blade Status Ailment Accumulation +5.2%Status Ailment Accumulation +5.2%
  • Blade's Blessing: Enhances abilities set to the first Link (Spinning Slash). Restores HP based on magical damage dealt against the enemy.
  • Will of the Blade: Enhances abiliies set to the third Link (Knight's Gambit). Enemies broken or brough to 0 HP by the ability used will be finished with a soul burst.
  • Status Ailment Accumulation +5.2%: Increases the chances that enemies will receive a Status Ailment when players attack them with an element based form of magic spell. Also applicable to melee attacks if weapons are imbued with an element or other status ailment.

Recommended Equipment Effects

Equipment Effects
MP Recovery Rate with Normal Attacks ( + )
Ability Break Damage Dealt ( + )
Status Ailment Resistant ( + )
All Damage Taken ( + )

Due to the focus of this build being on the use of the sword and shield in combat scenarios with a mix of Magic Use here and there to cause enemies to become afflicted with a Status Ailment, this build is an MP intensive one that requires, at most, the entire MP Gauge to be fully filled out.

Having Equipment Effects that recovers MP on top of also having buffs to how much damage the player can deal can go a long way in conserving the amount of MP players actually spend per enemy.

Magic Slicer Build

Magic Slicer
One other weapon-type that Red Mages can make use of are Daggers. One of the weak points when it comes to using Daggers and Knuckles prior to the Red Mage were that it could not be used alongside Magic spells outside of pairing Pugilist or Duelist based Jobs with Mage-based ones.

Red Mage covers this weakness, allowing players to play fast and loose with Daggers while also providing them with a means of exploiting an enemy's weaknesses through the available elemental spells at the fingertips of a Red Mage.

  • Reinforce: Unlocked in the Swordsman Job Tree, this ability makes it harder for enemies to stagger the player, as well as reducing the time needed to charge abilities. This means that while casting spells, the amount of time needed for the player to dedicate to just spells is reducing, allowing for the flow of combat to come quicker as players can quickly weave between melee and spell use.

Recommended Equipment Effects

Equipment Effects
MP Recovery Rate with Normal Attacks ( + )
Critical Damage ( + )
All Damage Dealt ( + )

For this build, the amount of critical damage you can deal against opponents is the most important aspec to winning in any engagement. This can be exponentially raise by raising Critical Damage and All Damage Dealt through Equipment Effects. The most pieces of equipment you have that have these effects, the bettwe your damage output will be.

Best Job Synergies and Pairings

Dragoon

DragoonDragoon Available Weapon(s) Shield?
Greatsword
Lance
Axe
Cannot use shields
Basic Info The Dragoon is a master of evasion and heavy damage. This job class allows you to jump high in the air to evade enemy attacks and then land on the enemy dealing greater damage.

Similar to its pairing with White Mage, Dragoon can be paired off with Red Mage due to the buff spells that it can cast, allowing Dragoon players to become quite explosive with their damage output against foes.

Knight

KnightKnight Available Weapon(s) Shield?
Greatsword
Sword
Can use shields
Basic Info The Knight is an advanced job. Knights use their ability Blessing of Light to unleash a shockwave of light that damages enemies whenever a successful guard is completed.

Due to the Red Mage a "Jack of All Trades", it has difficulty in shining as a powerful Job that players can reliably go to for any situation. Although it has the ability to use either Swords or Daggers, there is a struggle in reaching the full potential of either of these weapons.

Knight, similar to the Dragoon Job, can help players along with more damage output against opponents should it be needed, particularly since Red Mage has several buffs that it can provide to the Job that boosts its deadliness in combat.
