Parrying is an important skill you will need in order to fight enemies more competently in Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. Read on to learn how to parry, its effects, and tips on how to utilize this game mechanic.

How to Parry

Block Just Before an Enemy Attack Connects

Stranger of Paradise - Block and Counterattack
To parry an attack, players can simply anticipate their enemy's attack and just as the hit is about to land, press L1. Successful parries will not only prevent you from losing HP, but it will temporarily increase the recovery speed of your Break Gauge.

Parrying With a Shield

There are jobs that allow you equip a shield along with your main weapon and examples of these are the Sage and Swordfighter. Either with or without a shield, you can still parry attacks. All it requires it good timing.

Parrying Doesn't Work on Unblockable Attacks

While most of the regular attacks you encounter in the game can easily be deflected by with the right timing, you will encounter attacks that cannot be parried. These are fully Unblockable Attacks and since parrying isn't an option, evading would work instead.

Parry Effects

Break Gauge Recovery Speed

Parrying
Successful parries will result in your Break Gauge recovery speed increase temporarily. Players that have a perfect timing can make quick combos with this and land devastating blows to the enemy.

Counter Attacks

The Swordfighter job gives you access to Interception, an ability where all damage from blockable attacks get nullified and trigger a counterattack.

Skill Description
InterceptionInterception A counterattack that deals slashing damage. While active, damage from blockable attacks is nullified and will trigger a counterattack. Effect ensds after a period of time, or after triggering once.

Tips and Strategies

Study Attack Patterns

Stranger of Paradise (Griffon Queen) - Blockable Attacks
As there are numerous enemies you will encounter in this game, they will all have different attack patterns. When fighting an enemy for the first time, take the time to study their attack patterns to get a feel of what attacks you can and cannot block. This can make your fights go quicker as you can plan your attacks more effectively.

Incorporate Movement

Evade and Block
Parrying attacks and Soul Shielding abilities can only go so far in combat. Make sure to incorporate your parries with other elements of your movement in order to execute quicker and stronger combos.
