How to Use Soul Shield

The Soul Shield is a mechanic that enables you to block different kinds of attacks, while gaining MP to use your abilities. To use the Soul Shield, you have to hold Circle (default input on PS4/PS5), which will initiate the Soul Shield stance. You can also tap the Soul Shield button to instantly block attacks, which comes in handy against very quick enemies.

Reduces Your Break Gauge

Using the Soul Shield decreases your Break Gauge, which means that holding the stance for too long will deplete it completely. Make sure that you save your Soul Shield for strong enemy attacks and keep your Break Gauge up!

Gain More MP

Blocking attacks using the Soul Shield is also another effective way of restoring your MP gauge. This allows you to set up your abilities and spells, and give you another way of gathering more MP apart from breaking enemy gauges.

Unleash a Follow-Up Attack

After successfully blocking an attack, you can immediately lunge forward and deal an attack of your own. This is equivalent to parrying an attack, giving you an opening to counter them.

Gain Instant Abilities

Apart from gaining MP, you can also gain temporary Instant Abilities that you can use during combat. Depending on the type of attack you deflect, you will gain a similar ability (i.e. blocking a Fire spell will also give you a temporary Fire attack).

Best Timing to Use Soul Shield

Block Strong Melee Attacks

Using the Soul Shield against strong close-ranged attacks is also very effective. This temporarily staggers the enemy, giving you an opening to counterattack and use your abilities to beat them down. Use this against larger enemies to give you the strongest attacks!

Block Ranged Attacks

The Soul Shield is very effective at blocking ranged attacks, especially magic, which can be absorbed. Most ranged attacks can deal a significant amount of damage, and using your Soul Shield allows you to block them quickly, while gaining abilities to fight enemies back.

Gain Instant Abilities
