In Stranger of Paradise, the real Ether are the enemies you fight along the way. This means that using your Soul Burst and the Soul Shield against the minor enemies during this mission is the best way to increase your MP gauge and restore it. You'll end up using a lot of MP for each wave, so breaking enemies during the fight gives you a steady supply of MP to use.
The Soul Shield is very important, since blocking attacks and abilities allows you to restore MP. You can also stop certain enemy attacks, and even gain instant abilities (which can deplete Break Gauges) from it, which is very handy if you're in tight situations during fights.
