FF7’s Remake Part 3 Will Still Release on PS5

PlayStation players do not have to worry about where FF7 Remake Part 3 might be released, as the game’s producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi assured fans that it will be on PS5 during their interview with 4Gamer on January 23, 2025.

4Gamer asked about concerns some PS players might have regarding the release history of FF7 Remake (PS4) and FF7 Rebirth (PS5), and what this might imply for the final installment of the trilogy. "No, you can rest assured about the next one (FF7 Remake Part 3)," Kitase answered.

As PS5 is halfway through its lifecycle, the FF7 Remake trilogy might eventually arrive at the doorstep of its successor. However, not much is known about the eventual release of PS6.

FF7 Remake Part 3 Release Date

Square Enix has remained tight-lipped about the release date of the third and final installment of the FF7 Remake trilogy. Development on FF7 Remake Part 3 reportedly began alongside the production of Part 2, with full production ramping up after Part 2's release in February 2024. With reusable assets from the first two games and the story draft already completed, its release may not be far off.

Having said that, Hamaguchi and Naoki provided an update about its development progress during an interview with Famitsu on January 23, 2025. "It’s going very well," shared Hamaguchi. "We started working on the third game right after FFVII Rebirth ended, and we have a build that will confirm what we should aim for as a game by the end of 2024, and we can already see the direction of where we will land, so we have been working towards that goal since the beginning of this year. We are progressing without any delay from the schedule we planned when we launched the remake project, so we hope you will look forward to it."

Addressing the story of the FF7 Remake, Kitase shared that it is complete and happy with its conclusion. "At least I'm very satisfied with it, so I'm sure it will be a conclusion that will satisfy the fans as well."

FF7 Remake Part 3 Will Allegedly Be a Timed Exclusive Game

Though the release date has not been announced yet, a report from the Washington Post on March 6, 2024, mentioned that PlayStation acquired timed exclusivity of the FF7 Remake trilogy, making them available only to PS consoles for a certain period of time.

Initially, FF7 Remake (2020) was released as a PS4 exclusive for one year and eventually made its way to PC via Epic Games Store and Steam. Meanwhile, FF7 Remake Intergrade (an enhanced version of the first installment) was PS5 exclusive for six months before coming to PC. FF7 Rebirth’s PC version was released on January 23, 2025, after its timed exclusivity on PS5 in February 2024.

If FF7 Remake Part 3 follows the pattern of its predecessor, it will also exclusively launch on PS5 for a set amount of time before making its way to other platforms.

Square Enix Multi-Platform Strategy Amidst Declining Sales

Image

Though the FF7 Remake games are well-received by fans and new players alike, Square Enix’s HD (High-Definition) title sales are on the decline as reported on the company’s financial results on March 31, 2024. Some of the company’s HD titles last year are: FF16, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, and FF7 Rebirth.

Square Enix mentioned that "operating losses grew due to higher development cost amortization and advertising expenses, as well as higher content valuation losses versus the previous fiscal year." In the same report, the company plans to "aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs," which can potentially increase its sales.

Following this new business approach, more HD titles from Square Enix might make their way to Xbox, Switch 2, and other platforms despite the company's strong partnership with PlayStation.
