Whacka is a secret boss you can fight in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (TTYD). Read on to learn more about this boss, its stats, and how to beat it!
List of Contents
Whacka appear when you approcah them the empty space behind the ship in Keelhaul Key. Hitting a Whacka will give a Whacka Bump, which restores a large amount of HP.
Whacka can revive up to seven times each time you move in between areas, so the Whacka Bumps you can get by hitting them are a valuable item, with only eight of them available in total.
Whacka will appear on the 100th floor of the Pit of 100 Trials if the conditions for its appearance are met.
In order to make Whacka appear, you need to enjoy the story and finish the game first.
In order to make Whacka appear, you need to clear the Pit of 100 Trials once, and defeat Bonetail on the 100th floor.
You also need to whack the blue mole with your hammer several times in Keelhaul Key before it can appear at the end of the Pit.
After completing the previous three actions, Mario will receive an email that says a mystical creature has been seen deep in the Pit of 100 Trials.
After reading the email, go to the bottom of the Pit of 100 Trials and you will find Whacka waiting for you.

Only use single hit attacks against Whacka due to it dropping a Whacka Bump each time it gets hit. It can either attack with the Whacka Bump or recover HP by eating it.
Note that the more hits Whacka takes, the more Whacka Bumps appear for him to use against you.
Do note that Whacka Bumps can still drop even if you don't damage Whacka himself, which can happen if it damages itself or gets hit by stage props.
Types of Whacka Bumps | Details |
---|---|
Whacka Bump |
When used for attacking: 10 damage When used for healing: +25 HP |
Red Whacka Bump |
When used for attacking: 27 damage When used for healing: +75 HP |
Whacka Bumps that appear have different effects when used depending on the type, with the red bump being the more powerful one.
You can avoid getting hit by the powerful Whacka Red Bump, thrown by Whacka, by using Vivian's Veil move.
You can deflect the Whacka Bumps by using Superguard. This is also effective against Red Whacka Bump attacks.
You can use the Power Lift special move to increase your attack and defense powers to reduce the damage from Whacka's attacks. Once your attack power is increased, use your single target attacks to deal high amounts of damage.
In conjunction with raising Mario's stats, you can also use Goombella's Rally Wink to force Mario to move twice. This is useful to attack with single hit moves twice in one turn.
Whacka will also produce Whacka Bumps while getting damaged by burned status effect. Avoid using Vivian's fire moves or any items or badges that can apply burned status effect.
It is highly recommended to bring as many Life Shrooms as you can because the battle with Whacka involves a lot of luck, such as multiple red bumps appearing or bumps increasing due to random stage effects.
After defeating Whacka, you will get an important item, Golden Whacka Bump. This is a key item and has no in-battle effect.

Note that you DO need to see the email to fight him. I got the 8 bumps and went straight to the pit and got screwed.

using koops's shell shield is pretty effective when a lot of whackas are on stage
