The Action Command for Shell Shield requires the player to press A once the bar is in the middle of the gauge. The closer to the middle it lands, the higher the defensive capabilities of the giant shell. Try pressing A when you see the bar in the yellow area for better chances of landing directly at the middle.

Press A Before the Shell Hits the Ground
