You should fill out your 8 party member slots to maximize on the row switch mechanics introduced in Octopath Traveler 0.
Because of the 8 character party system, you can swap characters between the front and back row, which comes with its own benefits. For instance, placing characters in the back row willl have them heal HP and SP every turn. You will also have extra characters that you can switch to the front if another party member is heavily injured, or if you want to unleash extra BP attacks.

Row switching will automatically unlock once you have at least 5 members in your party. You will be able to adjust combat positions through at Taverns by interacting with the bartender.

Switch characters between the front and back row during battle. Keep in mind that there needs to be someone positioned directly behind a character to swap their places. If there is no one behind a character, you will be unable to place them in the back row, even if there is someone placed in the back row of a different character.

When a party member becomes too greatly injured, or can no longer perform Battle Skills, you can switch them out into the back row where they will recover HP and SP every turn.
Having more characters means you can bring more weapons into battle. If you balance your party correctly, you can always account for every weapon type weakness.

Party members in the back row will still accumulate Boost Points (BP) at the end of every turn. Once the front row has emptied their BP, switch them with their back row counterparts to expend their extra sets of BP, maximizing the amount of damage you can do during a single rotation.
