Just like in the previous games, you cannot choose or change the difficulty setting of Octopath Traveler 0.
Instead, the game uses a Danger Level to indicate how strong the enemies are in a location. The higher the Danger Level in an area, the tougher they are to beat.
Can You Change Difficulty Settings?

At the start of the game, after customizing your character, you will be asked to pick a learned skill, favorite dish, and belongings.
You should pick your starting choices according to what will benefit you most in combat, and boost your character's attack or defense stats.
| Learned Skill | Effect |
|---|---|
| Twin-Shot Mastery | Select a weapon and deal damage to a foe 2 time(s). |
| Weaken Foundation Mastery | Lower Phys. Atk. and Phys. Def of a foe for 2 turn(s). |
For your Learned Skill, pick either Twin-Shot Mastery, or Weaken Foundation Mastery since they are the most useful in combat.
Twin Shot allows you to strike twice in a single turn, while Weaken Foundation Mastery can weaken enemy stats and make them easier to defeat.

Choose the Dish that gives +5% Phys. Def to boost your Defense stat and increase your survivability in battle during the early game
Which Favorite Dish Should You Choose?
| Belonging | Benefits |
|---|---|
Crested Key |
An item you need to recruit Viator. Choosing it at the start allows you to recruit him early without having to take any detours. |
Fighter's Wristband |
Increases the user's Physical Attack by 10% when equipped. It is great if you want to go for physical jobs such as Warrior or Hunter. |
Letter Fragment |
The Letter Fragment is an item you'll need to recruit Alexia early on. Choosing it at the start will allow you to recruit her easily without looking for it elsewhere. |
Getting the Crested Key helps you recruit Viator early on without needing to take any detours, and getting the Letter Fragment, will help you recruit Alexia.
Then, choose either the Fighter's Wristband or the Promise Charm to boost your Physical Attack stat or Elemental Attack stat depending on your job.

There are items and events that cannot be collected or revisited after certain points in the game. It is best to collect and view them before they are gone.
This includes dialogue options from Side Quests. However, you may still view alternative dialogue options from Main Quests, as they do not impact the story and can be viewed in the Journal again.
List of Missables and Points of No Return

After the prologue, you will be opted to a new set of decisions. First will be your Job or Class, then a Mastery, and finally some starting skills to set you on your real journey.
Create the best character build that suits your playstyle and carefully analyze everything before moving forward!

After the events following the prologue, you and Stia will be returning back to Wishvale.
This will serve as your new base and town where you'll start constucting buildings, inviting residents to live with you, and building special places like the Church, Museum, Monster Arena, and the Training Ground!
Town Building Guide: Town Size and Limitations

Path Actions are actions that you make outside of combat when interacting with townspeople, and have the opportunity to succeed or fail depending on your influence stats.
Successful Path Actions can result in obtaining free items, haggling lower prices, inviting NPCs to Wishvale, and even recruiting new party members. If you fail all 5 available Path Actions in town though, you can always restore your reputation in a nearby tavern!

Octopath Traveler 0's combat makes use of a Break and Boost system where you exploit enemy weaknesses to break their defenses, and gain Boost Points (BP) which you can then use to perform more powerful actions.

EXP is required for you to level up and access areas with higher danger levels. Not to worry though as there are ways to earn EXP fast such as defeating Caits, eating EXP food buffs, and more!
