Octopath Traveler 0 (Octopath 0) uses a Break and Boost battle system where you exploit enemy weaknesses to boost your attacks. Learn more about how to break enemies, how to use boost points (BP), and how to get more BP.

Use a Boost Point (BP) to enhance an ally's action. The more BPs you add on, the more powerful the effect. You can only use up to 3 BPs at a time to enhance your action, which will unleash maximum effects.
| Action | Boost Effect |
|---|---|
| Regular Attack | Increases number of strikes |
| Damage Skill | Increases damage dealt |
| Buff/Debuff Skill | Increases number of turns affected |
| Healing Skill | Increases health restored |
Different types of Actions get different benefits from BPs. For regular attacks, adding BPs allow you to deal multiple strikes. For Damage Skills, you can inflict heavier damage. For Buff/Debuff Skills, your status changes last longer, and for Healing Skills, the amount of HP you restore increases.

It is fine to use one or two BPs to add more strikes to your regular attacks so you can break enemy shields faster. Just make sure you only do this when you already know the enemy's weakness so that you don't end up wasting your BPs.

We recommend using up three BP for an attack or skill only when the enemy shields are broken. Enemies are at their most vulnerable when they are stunned, and you can inflict more damage with your attacks.
Characters naturally gain BP each turn, but keeping them in the back row lets them build BP safely while avoiding damage. This is great for support units or anyone preparing a big 3-BP attack later.
Jobs like Hunter, Thief, and Scholar already learn multi-hit skills early. These are more efficient for breaking shields compared to boosting normal attacks just to get extra strikes. This lets you save your BP for damage bursts after the break.
Boosting only works if the hit actually lands on an enemy’s weakness. Don’t spend BP trying to break shields until you’ve confirmed what weapon or element will work.
BP isn’t only for damage. Using BP on healing or support actions can extend buff durations, strengthen healing output, and prevent the need for repetitive recasts!
This is especially useful during boss fights where stabilizing the party matters more than raw damage.
If an enemy is almost dead or already on the verge of breaking, save your BP. Using BP at the wrong moment leads to wasted turns.
Before spending BP, check who acts next. Sometimes the best move is either breaking the enemy with no boost then letting a fast character unload a full 3-BP attack afterward, or saving BP for the turn after a boss ends its defensive state.
Being aware of the turn timeline makes your BP feel twice as valuable.

Enemy shields can be broken by using attacks that target enemy weaknesses, which are indicated by the weapon icons underneath an enemy's display.
Every time you strike an enemy's weakness, the number on the enemy shield goes down. When it reaches 0, the shield breaks and the enemy becomes stunned for a few turns.
| Skill | Type | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Debuff |
SP Cost: 1 Discover 1 weak point(s) of a foe and reveal HP. |
Scholars can use Analyze to reveal one enemy weakness and briefly show an enemy's HP. However, using this skill will take up a turn, so use it strategically.

You can still tell an enemy's HP without using Analyze by looking at the color of their name.
When the name color is white, that means the enemy still has more than 50% HP remaining. Once it reaches yellow, you have reached the 50% mark. When the color turns red, there is less than 25% HP left, and the enemy is likely to be defeated in the next few turns.

Boost Points (BP) is earned at the end of every turn for each party member. You can also earn BP by breaking enemy shields. Your collected BPs are indicated by the glowing red orbs found on top of the HP bar.
