Lv. 10 - Staggers nearby enemies when you land from a height.
Lv. 20 - Boosts mounted charge impact damage by 100%

The best horse in the game is the Red Hare due to its ability to mow down groups of soldiers during mounted charge. Its high speed and endurance allows Wanderer to travel to and from bases quickly in the battlefield, enabling quick response to ally officers in need.

Note that Red Hare can only be obtained during post-game. While it cannot be used to speedrun the initial playthrough, it can be used on the mission replay and story rewind to fulfill hidden objectives and trophies with ease.

Lv. 20 - Staggers nearby enemies when you summon your horse.

Birch boasts high speed and endurance, only second to Red Hare in stats. Its ability to increase mounted charge distance allows Birch to cover ground faster and farther than most horses when dashing, marking it as the best horse in the game pre-Red Hare for traveling.

3. Chestnut

Lv. 10 - Boosts defense by 20% when mounted.
Lv. 20 - Increases speed when near death.

Chestnut's abilities are designed to transport Wanderer out of danger.

It drastically reduces damage taken from arrows, on top of increasing defense when mounted. At Lv. 20, Chestnut gains increased speed when Wanderer is low on health, enabling him to retreat to allied bases, empty battlefields, or scour the area for meat buns to heal.
