Break the Eight Gates Formation

Hint: Turn on sound to hear the wind!

The Eight Gates Formation can be broken by entering the correct gates, namely: the Gate of View, Gate of Life, and the Gate of Opening located in the west, east, and south respectively.

The gates can be determined by using the Eyes of the Sacred Bird, where the flags are highlighted white and the sound of the wind can be heard at the entrance.

How to Use Eyes of the Sacred Bird

Victory Condition: Defeat Xiahou Yuan

The battle is won after Xiahou Yuan is defeated. He will appear once the Eight Gates Formation breaks.

Defeat Condition: Either Liu Bei or Xu Shu Flees

The battle ends in a loss if either Liu Bei or Xu Shu has been defeated in battle. Due to the nature of this battle, however, their defeat is not likely as the enemy is fighting defensively.

How to Unlock Battle of Xinye

Finish Battle of Runan in Shu Path

Talk to Zhou Cang at Jing Province after the Battle of Runan. Battle of Xinye will be unlocked afterwards.

Conquer the Northern Bases Break the Eight Gates Formation Defeat Xiahou Yuan

Conquer the Northern Bases

Upon starting the mission, conquer the bases located on the north and northeast of the map. A cutscene will occur afterwards, with Xu Shu revealing the formation's weakpoints. Enter the large area holding the Eight Gates Formation to continue.

Break the Eight Gates Formation

Enter the Western Gate, the Gate of View

Head to the western side of the formation to find the Gate of View. The gate is determined by hearing the wind blow and the flag is highlighted white while using the Eyes of the Sacred Bird at its entrance.

After entering the gate, the soldiers will halt your advance and Han Hao will emerge for combat. Defeat him to dismantle the Gate of View, with Mao Jie appearing afterwards. Defeat him and exit the formation to proceed.

Enter the Eastern Gate, the Gate of Life

Travel eastward to find the Gate of Life. Use the Eyes of the Sacred Bird and enter the gate where the wind is blowing.

Jia Kui will appear shortly after entering the Gate of Life. His defeat will break the formation on the east side, and Du Xi will appear to engage for combat. Defeat him to continue and exit the formation after.

Enter the Southern Gate, the Gate of Opening

Proceed by heading south, and enter the gate closer to the west. The final gate is the Gate of Opening, and dismantling it will finally break the Eight Gates Formation. Remember to utilize the Eyes of the Sacred Bird to check if the gate is correct.

Shortly after entering the Gate of Opening, Li Dian will appear to protect the formation. Defeat him to breach the south, and eliminate Jia Xu who appears afterwards to break the Eight Gates Formation.

Defeat Xiahou Yuan

After the formation breaks, head towards the center of the formation to find Xiahou Yuan. Bring him his defeat to end the battle with a victory.

Weapon Proficiency

Weapon proficiency is awarded on the weapon/s used during the battle. Raising proficiency ranks up Wanderer, and reaching specific ranks can unlock skill trees that can enhance his performance in combat.
