Meat Bun Glutton and Greater Gratification are the best skills to get early on, as these skills increase the carrying capacity and healing amount of Meat Buns respectively.
This is immensely helpful for survivability, and can help newer players sustain themselves better through challenging fights.

Meat Bun Glutton increases the amount of Meat Buns you can carry. It's a simple skill, but greatly appreciated as it increases the amount of healing items that can be taken into battle.
Meat Bun Glutton (Knight-Errant) Skill

Greater Gratification increases the healing that Meat Buns provide, and is a generally helpful skill that is good to have at any stage of the game to bolster survivability.
Greater Gratification (Adept) Skill

Perfect Evade is an extremely useful skill to have early on to supplement Bravery gain, as it grants Bravery when you dodge right before an attack hits.
Battle Arts will be a crucial part of fighting throughout the game, and facilitating their use in any way is a massive boon.

Chain Evasion works well with Perfect Evade to quickly generate Bravery by dodging combos or back-to-back attacks from enemies. It also works well as a survivability tool, enabling players to dodge away until out of danger.
Chain Evasion (Knight-Errant) Skill

Back On Your Feet is an emergency heal that triggers at low HP, and can make the difference between life and death in tight scenarios. It's nice to have on hand as a small second wind to help push out of danger more safely.

Refreshing Rescue is a crucial ability that can save allied officers in a pinch by healing them when you get close, giving you more breathing room to stabilize in an otherwise dangerous situation.
Refreshing Rescue (Adept) Skill

Whirlwind Kick is a versatile Battle Art that makes the player invulnerable while performing it. That invulnerability can be used flexibly to avoid attacks that otherwise would've hit the player.
Whirlwind Kick (Knight-Errant) Skill

In the early game, a generic Battle Art like Dispersion Arrow can help clear out mobs and deal significant damage to officers before stronger Arts are available.
Use it in the early game, but be sure to swap over to better options once they appear.
Dispersion Arrow (Adept) Skill

Endurance Boost: Spur On increases the Endurance players can grant their mounted horse, leading to more dashes. It's a good quality-of-life skill that can contribute to shorter time spent travelling between points of interest.
Endurance Boost: Spur On (Knight-Errant)

Any and all Health Increase nodes are great nodes to pick up, especially if you're a newer player to the game. Being able to soak more damage gives you more room for error, and a higher chance of surviving a mission.
