The mission's main objective is lighting the altar located on the southwest. The altar can only be lit if the winds are blowing southeast, which can be detected using the Eyes of the Sacred Bird.
How to Use Eyes of the Sacred Bird
The battle is won after felling Cao Cao in battle. Note that this is not possible until the altar is lit, and that Cao Cao will rise a second time after felling him. Light the altar and defeat him twice to end in a victory.
The battle is lost if any of the ally generals flee. Respond to their call for aid to avoid losing the battle.

Once the battle starts, the enemy will initiate an attack on the eastern front. Respond to their attack and defeat the enemy general Zhang Liao.
When aiding Liu Bei's forces, the mission starts on the west side instead. Defeat the enemy forces attacking the western front, led by their general Yue Jin.
After Zhang Liao's or Yue Jin's defeat, enemy ambush will appear from the southeast and southwest. Disengage from occupying the east—or west in Shu Route—and aid the ally troops on the southeast first. Continue repelling the ambush westward until you reach the southwest.
Zhang He and Yu Jin will appear during the ambush, and will make their way towards the southern base. If left alone, they will annihilate ally generals and officers in their way, until they reach Liu Bei and Sun Quan. Respond to them first when repelling the ambush to avoid further losses.
Huang Gai will later reappear in the northern bank. After he emerges, defeat either Xiahou Dun or Xun You attempting to charge Zhuge Liang on the southwest to trigger the wind to change.
Use the Eyes of the Sacred Bird to see the if the wind is blowing southeast. When it does, fire the signal to light the altar and start the second phase of the battle.
After Cao Cao's forces start retreating, return to the east and intercept Xu Shu and Xun Yu. They will attempt to raise the gate to prevent the fire from spreading, bolstering enemy morale. Eliminate them first before heading north.
Upon arriving at the northern bank, fell Jia Xu, Xu Zhu, and Zhenji first before fighting Cao Cao. If left alone, the three will initiate a True Musou Attack that will drastically increase enemy morale and deplete ally forces.
When ready, initiate combat with Cao Cao. If the fire spreads successfully and the enemy True Musou Attack was not initiated, Cao Cao will have less fortitude to fight with.
Xiahou Dun and Zhang Liao will reappear after Cao Cao's defeat, following their retreat from the southwest path and eastern front. Defeat them once more, along with the remaining enemy generals and officers in battle.
After their reappearance, Cao Cao will rise again for combat. It is recommended to defeat the other generals first to ensure an uninterrupted fight with Cao Cao.
Defeat Cao Cao once more. The battle is won after successfully repelling Cao Cao and his forces.

Bringing Sun Quan and Liu Bei's defeat will end the battle in a victory. They can be fought in the northern bank when allies are retreating from the fire, or in the southern bank when in the true end route. Note that you need to set Guo Jia as your companion if you're trying to unlock the Wei true ending.
Wei True Ending Guide (Cao Cao's Forces)
The battle will end in a loss if Cao Cao's health is depleted. He will be in peril after Zhou Yu's forces are intercepting his escape in the northern bank. Aid him as soon as you can once allies are retreating to the north.

The battle starts with Cao Cao's forces aboard a ship. Enter the southern bank upon docking and eliminate the eastern forces.
After breaching through the enemy's eastern front, continue eliminating generals, officers, and conquering bases in the southern bank. Engage and win duels when possible, and prepare to aid in retreat after the volley of arrows stop.
When replaying the mission during post-game, head towards the central ship and wait for Huang Gai's arrival. He will appear once the ally forces stops the volley of arrows in the southern bank.
Defeating Huang Gai and preventing the fire will fulfill one of the conditions for Wei's true ending. The battle will continue with Cao Cao's forces occupying the southern bank and defeating Liu Bei.
After the cutscene of Huang Gai's defection, stay behind and head southwest. Defeat Guan Yu to prevent him from joining the main enemy forces up north, whose mission is to eliminate Cao Cao.
After defeating Guan Yu, rush towards the northern bank and look for Liu Bei and Sun Quan. The battlefield will be chaotic, and it is recommended to utilize tactics and War God Rage if the enemies are overwhelming the ally forces.
Defeat both generals for Cao Cao to succeed in escaping and end the mission in a victory.
