When you are about to join the battle, you will need to pick a side to fight for. Choosing a side will render you unable to join the opposing faction for the rest of the playthrough.
When fighting on the side Wei (Cao Cao), the battle ends in a victory if Tao Qian is defeated. Tao Qian will be found at the main camp to the east.
When fighting on the side of Wei (Cao Cao), the battle ends in a defeat if Cao Cao is forced to flee.
When fighting on the side of Shu (Liu Bei), the battle ends in a victory if Cao Cao is defeated.
When fighting on the side Shu (Liu Bei), the battle ends in a defeat if either Tao Qian or Liu Bei is forced to flee.
Once you have picked a side in the Battle of Xu Province, you can no longer join the opposing faction in that battle onwards. In the case of this battle, you will be locked out of either Wei or Shu factions.
For example, deciding to join Cao Cao's side in this battle means you will not be able to join Liu Bei's faction for the rest of the playthrough.
You can still join the Wu Faction (Sun Jian) if you complete enough of its related quests prior to the Time is Passing event. You will just have to decide later if you want to join them or Shu (Liu Bei) in the Battle of Xiaopei.
All Missables and Points of No Return
The Battle of Xu Province will become available depending on the missions you complete for a faction before the point of no return. It will appear once you get the prompt about 'Time is Passing'.
Note again that siding with a faction will in this battle will lock you out from joining the oppossing faction and affect the ending of the game.

Above is a sample route when fighting on Cao Cao's side. The strategy similarly applies when fighting on the side of Liu Bei.
The Battle of Xu Province will be a lengthy mission; you will want to ensure you survive all the way until the last enemy camp. It is best to secure the surrounding areas first before you take on the main base of the enemy.
Sticking to only pushing from the center may cause your allies to be overwhelmed from all sides. Make sure to clear bases slowly going to the opposite end from top to bottom first. Keep an eye out on
Enemies in the north and south of this battle will at some point [redfully focus on your general[/red]. This event appears as an orange warning promp indicating increased courage. Take note of the orange warning pins on the map immediately.
It is best to rush to the defense of your general right away whenever this happens to prevent defeat.
Depending on which side you are on for this fight, you will encounter officers who will be difficult to deal with. On easier difficulties (Wayfarer and below), defeating officers can sometimes drop Meat Buns to help restore health.
If you are on the side of Cao Cao, you will want to look out for Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Tao Qian. If you are on the side of Liu Bei, look out for Cao Cao, Yu Jin, and Dian Wei.
When fighting officers in the field, advantage of isolating them first from others to make it easier to deal with them, or make sure you are fighting them alongside another allied officer.
You can use Arts, Assaults, or Tactics to push them away from a crowd at least.
Put Tactics and Companions to full use since you will be encountering groups of officers and Large Forces in this fight. Use the Eyes of the Sacred Bird to help you make your plan of attack against groups of enemies, especially during a Grand Tactic.
Don't forget to also make use of War God Rage to give you temporary invincibility. You'll want to make use of this if ever you find yourself in a pinch or are attacking multiple officers in a cluster.
Weapon Proficiency will be rewarded based on the weapon/s used in battle. Ranking up weapon proficiency raises Wanderer's level, and reaching certain levels will unlock new skill trees to spend skill points on.
Skill points and Mount EXP are also awarded based on the number of enemies defeated and which Horse was used. These rewards vary greatly depending on the Wanderer's performance during battle.
