When using an Ascendant Floret, we recommend getting the next superboon if it fits the hero. If not, consider what stat your hero needs most.
The best IVs for Arval are +Res and -Def. A Res superboon improves their performance as a magic wall, makes Rite of Souls' Res check more reliable, and also increases their damage output through the true damage effect.
Their Def is below average and is prone to being defeated by physical attackers. Thus, it is a safe bane to take.
We recommend +Res when merging Arval up to +10 for similar reasons above. Arval's performance relies on a Res check, and improving their Res makes him more reliable.

Arval is a ranged magic attacker (range = 2). Therefore, when not accounting for the Weapon Triangle, the amount of damage they deal will be equivalent to their Atk minus the foe's Res stat.
Arval's Rite of Souls accelerates their Special trigger, inflicts 【Guard】 on all enemies within 3 columns or 3 rows centered on Arval at the start of turn, grants Atk/Spd/Def/Res+5 to Arval during combat, deals true damage equal to 20% of Arval's Res, and denies their foe's follow-up attacks.
While none of these effects are gamebreaking, they are all impactful in their own way. All of these effects bundled up into one weapon make Arval a formidable unit for your team.
Arval's exclusive A skill Duality has a unique effect which grants Arval weapon-triangle advantage against red, blue, and green foes, and disables skills that affect weapon-triangle calculations like Triangle Adept 3 and Cancel Affinity 3..
On top of the weapon-triangle effects, Duality also grants Arval a flat Atk/Res+9 with no drawbacks and grants Arval a guaranteed follow-up attack during combat.
This skill makes matching up against Arval quite difficult, especially if there are no colorless units to face them directly in combat.
Rite of Souls has two different conditions that can affect Arval's performance in battle.
The 【Guard】status infliction relies on both Arval winning a Res check and being in its range, while the other effects require Arval to either initiate combat or be within 2 spaces of an ally.
Careful planning will be required when positioning Arval to ensure their weapon triggers all of its effects.
Arval's Def stat is only at a base 23, which leaves them vulnerable to physical damage attackers.
Keep them out of range of these units to ensure they remain alive.
