“Can't Invite Friend” Meaning

Most of the time this means that the client failed to perform the search for your friend, rather than the friend was unsearchable. This can be an indication that there are local network issues or server side congestion. It could also simply be that the friend on question is not connected at the time of inviting.

“Friend on a Different Version” Meaning

Although the error message “friend on a different version” is being displayed, this is not actually the case. As Overwatch 2 is fully cross-platform, you are able to invite friends regardless of whether you are all playing on the same console/PC.

Furthermore, Overwatch 1's servers shutdown with the commencement of Overwatch 2, so there is no different version. As with the “can't invite friend” error message, this is generally an indicator of a server side issue, or potential error with the Social UI.

Social UI Glitch

Blizzard states in their Known Issues Guide that players being unable to invite their friends or recent players using the Social UI is due to an in-game error. Specifically stating that the “on a different version” message is part of this error.
